kept his nerve with the penalty as well, took a lot of bottle to go up in those circumstances and to put the ball right in the corner, especially after seeing their keeper make a great save from gerrards pen.
dowining (and kuyt) must have been thinking if this doesnt go right in the corner this fella is going to get it.

have felt that out of all the summer signings he has been the most disappointing. However today he did put in a really good shift and hopefully that works as a catalyst for future endevours.

He was really good today, especially in the first half. He was a little bit anonymous in the second half after shifting to the right to make room for Bellamy. It just underlines that there is an opportunity for a new or current player to make that right wing position their own.

Has played well against Brighton and Cardiff.

Hope it gives the fella some confidence and he can carry his improved performance into games against sterner opposition, atm I remain unconvinced.

If we ever get relegated Downing will be an important player for us.  :D

He had a 'good' game, he needs to have more 'good' games with a load of 'blinders' thrown into the mix against Prem league teams.

he's played well for the past 2 games but that's been against opponents in the lower divisions. not to take any credit from him, but he's not proven himself to be someone who can provide goals and assists.

Played ok. Some dodgy crossing and some decent. Scored a vital pen so well done

He did at Villa. He was in the top 5 in the league for assists last season.

The difference being at Villa he had Darren Bent getting on the end of the crosses.. a poacher... there isn't anyone at the club who does this.

Downing made umpteen great crosses across the face of goal and there was no one on the end of them... the immoblile lumbering Carroll static at the edge of the penalty area. Mark Lawrenson was screaming at Carroll to move, to anticipate the cross, rather than remain static as per usual.

Luis is a #7 (a Beardsley, a Kenny) so he will drift outfield.. we need a #9.. a mobile box poacher. Downings stats will then accurately reflect his work.

So Carrolls headers werent really headers and Downings dodgy crosses werent really dodgy?
