Petard is french for little fart.
The petard was essentially a big, heavy gauge metal pot filled with powder. It was used to blow in the doors of fortified places

I always thought it was a flagpole or something, fair play for putting me right woof. How did they hoist it then if it was a little pot? (sorry off topic I know).
