Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

it's all subjective. a year down the line if the players have performed nobody will even mention the fees we paid for these players. i was speaking to a fan the other day and he was banging on about these players having a "re-sale value". i honestly couldn't believe what i was hearing.

it's market forces unfortunately and you have to pay the going rate nowadays. as said united have been breaking the transfer record for years. chelsea completely inflated the market by overspending on players just to stop other teams buying them (SWP for example). now real madrid and man city are doing it and will continue to do so.

I think hes a very good player... Solid defensively and better than average going forward... He'd slot right into that LB spot imo and would help our back4 defensively imo which is more than could have been said about Clichy (for example)...

Atm, to be perfectly honest, I've given up trying to understand what we are trying to do in the midfield and forward positions... As far as the backline are concerned, I think it will be the signings we make in the next month or so (if we make any) that make or break our season... If we can get to the point where our side is very hard to beat then we'll always be in with a good shot at making the top4.. If we are as disappointing defensively next season as we have been the last couple of years then we have no chance at a CL spot imo...

I just don't understand why we haven't done anything about our back 4. Despite having Reina back there the defense was very shaky last season and Carra, who was no star last season, is even a year older. Agger is never fit 3 games in a row, Skrtel is everwhere and Aurelio isn't fit 3 games in a row.

Our midfield and forwards(albeit could use one more) is definitly top 4 material, our defense is absolutely not.

The league last season was just so weird everyone was taking points off each other, loads of unexpected results, we where a joke and an embarressment the first 6 months of it Ive never felt so low as I did watching us knowing we where going to get beat ecspecially in our away games I never want the club to go there ever again from lofty heights finishing second, being feared all over Europe to become a complete laughing stock within a short space of time that hurt, it was painfull seeing what we had become.

In hindsight John Henry should have sacked The Owl after the derby not only because of the sh!thouse pathetic not @rsed performance but also for his comments of
(It was the best performance he had seen ) & (If we had won here it would have been Utopia) Them comments made my blood boil, when you have The mongrels singin Goin Down to you, you realise how bad things have become.  But still in our worst start in 50 odd years we still finished above them.

The Mancs winning 19 wasnt as bad as I thought it would be because we where not challenging them if we would have been up there fighting for the title it would have felt worse I imagine? But Kenny & Clarke coming in and some of the games we played where really exciting brilliant performances Fulham, Chelsea, City, United. Where or are they a taste of things to come? You would hope they where & are, but then we had the Spurs and Villa games then it was back to the same old rubbish we have been seeing time and time again.
Hopefully it was just to dodge the bullet of The Europa League and not a continous cycle of not being consistant enough to mount a top 4 finish or challenge for the title.

It is what lets us down not being consistant enough, I have every faith in Kenny and believe he will be going for the league this season by the players we have brought in, its our players that have been here for quite a while that worry me by not putting effort in, and resting on their laurels, not busting a gut to win every game just going through the motions.  Even Riise said he done it, if Kenny & Clarke can manage to get rid of that mentality then there is no reason why we cannot win a trophy this season, the players have to want it though.

I cannot wait for the season to start I feel its going to be a really exciting one, no defenders will fancy playing against Carroll & Suarez add Downing whipping in crosses then there is an awful lot to look forward to the bench will look better than it has been for a while, and we really need to hit the ground running if we do anything can happen, anything is possible.

But one concern is Ngog being back up to Carroll & Suarez this kid is good against none english teams but in the league his record is terrible, you cannot rely on Kuyt filling in for Suarez & Carroll if god forbid they got injured do we have enough back up in the goal scoring department? I am not so sure. Maybe kenny thinks Maxi, Downing & Adam would be capable of scoring if we where without our strike force at some point of the season.

Yes a lot of moneys been spent if it gets us back into the top 4 this season it will have been worth it.  :)

I think we will sign more players, we just need to get rid of a few first.  Think Id prefer a CB than a LB to be honest.  Carra is getting on a bit now, Agger is injured too often, Skrtel cant be trusted and neither can Soto.  At least at LB we have a couple of players that can do a job.

To be fair, that was their first game as owners i believe?  How ruthless would that have been?   :D

They wouldnt have faced any opposition should they have wielded the axe, in a way the Owl done us a favour I dont believe that the owners wanted kenny as a manager I think they wanted their own man. Not that I have no proof of this just a feeling.  Anyway Im delighted with the outcome him being around just makes you feel good.

I think your right about Kenny.
If we had no manager when the owners came in i dont think they would have chosen Kenny based on what they have done with the baseball management.
Its worked out perfect, i havent felt so good about things in a long time, and mostly that's down to Kenny being back.

Perhaps we have overpayed at some points but I personally feel relieved that we are simply snapping up players relatively early in the transfer window rather than being involved in everlasting transfer sagas to save a bit of money when signing a player. I don't like to see big teams putting pressure on other clubs to practically force them to save their best players (like Barcelona) and I am glad to see we aren't doing this by paying asking prices. I'm quite surprised that nobody seems to acknowledge this (not in this forum but generally) and chooses to bang on about how much we are overpaying for players. Maybe we deserve a bit of credit for not trying to blag smaller clubs into selling.

You reckon Kenny and Steve Clark aren't aware?

There's a cunning plan but its so cunning, we can't work it out.

Have faith.

We did try to get Jones and Gael clichy but missed out to the Manchester duo, both young, prem exp etc. So I think they realize that the back 4 needs addressing, but they want the right guys in not knocheskies and dossena's.

TBH I would welcome buying no-one if it meant that we genuinely missed out on players that are an improvement to what we have now.

Over the last 6 months we’ve spent over 75 million....and (according to the press) we’re still in the hunt for a left back and central defender. So that figure could break the 100 million mark easily....

Are we over spending? Are the players we’re signing worth the cash we’re paying?

Personally i think we’re are...maybe it’s our new policy of buying home grown or the fact the other clubs know we’re looking to improve, but we’re defiantly spending more than we should. Don’t get me wrong, i think our new players are improving the squad and we’ll be challenging....I just fear the silly season is descending  upon Anfield and we're getting ripped off on a massive level on our transfers

why do we need a central defender? ???? ???

we have kyriagos, carra, skrtle and agger?

money dont mean a thing, we need results.
