I think we have more than enough central midfield roles, i reckon Kenny will groom Spearing to play there like Masch did!

As for Mata, hes a class act but hes not a proper winger, hes more of a midfielder that drifts inside from the wing, kinda like Luis Garcia, Mata is not gonna get to the by-line and whip crosses in! Hes more of the Joe Cole / Maxi type of wide player, albeit ten times better!

Stewart Downing would be a great signing in my opinion, maybe if he wore more coloured boots people would think hes a bit more flash!! He is the type of player we need, will get to the end line and get crosses in, and can play on either wing! Fully established in the premier league, knows every team inside out and would hit the ground running which is massively important this season to build momentum early on!! I would have preferred Ashley Young but Downing is a very able replacement!

Also wouldnt be too upset if we got NZogbia as well, why not, Downing and NZogbia running at full backs on either side of the pitch

Owen Hargreaves is claiming to be fully fit and is posting daily video's on You Tube to prove that. An option to bing in on a pay as you play basis. Someone who would offer a bit of experience in the defensive MF role? Can hardly be classed a die hard MUFC man as he only played a handful of games for them.

Doesn't necessarily fit with the Fenway Sports way of thinking but on a pay as you play basis he may offer decent cover. Gives him a chance to prove himself as well so maybe a win win??

how old is he?

he's only 30, which is weird because he seems to have been around for about 15 years :D

Downing is a very ordinary player I hope we don't go any higher in the bidding and switch our attention else where, Some people are saying well he was there player of the season but that's all it was was one season in a very average team, I suppose in away it reflects Lucas with us and there no rush for him, I also remember us signing Middlesbrough's player of the season 5 years ago in Bolo Zenden and a fat load of good he was

the deal will be done in the next few days and i'm right behind it. i suspect we'll be looking at £20m.

This is actually exactly how I've felt.  Let's just get him and get it over with.  We aren't trying to work Villa for all they've got, when you buy a player and he does better than he did before, you usually turn a profit... Villa should expect the same.

Still hoping we can get a deal for Mata, tho if we do I would expect a 4-3-3 to be played.

surely that says more about the player and his abilities?

7 goals and 9 assists from midfield isn't bad at all in a "struggling team" as you say. kuyt, mereiles and suarez had 8, 8 and 7 assists respectively in a better side.

I agree Mata looks a good player but we can't compare him to Downing as he isn't a winger.

i rather see us spend the money on N'Zogbia and Figueroa then use it on a very average Downing.

You could get N'Zogbia and Adam for the price of Downing.

SportingLife report Dann maybe close to going to Stoke, if we are interested in him that would be unbelievable losing out to them.

apparently villa want £19m. if that's the case then he's essentially cost us £3m more than ashley young cost united when young only had 1 year left on his contract. downing has 2 years left.

I think we will get him and then Villa will get N'Zogbia.

I would prefer we went for him instead, as I said earlier we could get Adam and N'Zogbia for the price of Downing.

I've tried to get hold of Johno but he's disappeared off the planet recently, which obviously means he's at Melwood NOW having a medical or he might be on holiday still so I've done the next best thing...
