I am quietly hoping we are currently going through a bidding war for Aguero... who knows?... :p

When we bought Carroll I thought we should've saved that 30 million and bid the whole of 50 million to get Aguero in the summer... I'm sure I posted it too...

There was a rumour Henry blocked the Downing bid at £19m so it may be the £15m is their final offer and they will move for Mata. The problem we have is Downing wants to play for Liverpool where as the Spaniard will have a host of suitors and there will be tough competetion to get him here.

Forget Downing now, let's get N'Zogbia for half the price.

15 million is a very honest and fair offer for Downing. He has only two years on his contract left and refuses to sign another. To say he is worth 20 when they let a better player in young go for 16 is greed.

I will be very annoyed if we pay a penny over this, including Ngog being offered, sod em. I would rather have Mata any day of the week!

I would but he isn't a winger, so if we don't get Downing we need to go for somebody else.

N'Zogbia and Mata I like the sound of.

Anybody heard of Ganzo from Santos in Brazil? Everybody talks about Neymar but on that same team their is quite a talented lad which could be an intersting signing...

Please pass this to KK if you can  :)

no way shud we pay over 15m for downing, we cud add 5m to that for mata which is a better deal, plus i agree with the nzogbia talk to, half the price and just as good. villa can :censored: off if they accept 16-17m for young downing is worth 12-13m

Definitely Mata the better option to Downing, if we can get him.  I am going to be patient this transfer window.  There are far better people, a better structure and more money involved this year.  I like how we're operating.  We'll get some quality.  Have no doubt we'll be back in the CL places next year with Arsenal on a bit of a slide and Utd having their worst season since the PL began.

Interesting call to talksport I heard on my way to work this morning. Caller compared the £30M rated Modric with Downing in terms of minutes played, goals scored and assists.

Downing won in all 3 categories with 7 goals/9 assists (in a poor team) vs. Modric's 4 goals/3 assists (in a much better team)

I think that £15M for Downing is good business but, like many on here, would rather see Juan Mata as our 1st choice. £20M for Downing is a little OTT but he is a quality player.

£15m was never going to be enough for downing when the likes of henderson and jones have moved for more. he's 27 an approaching his peak so considering villa paid £12m for him they were always going to try and maximise their return on the player. downing is an established england international at the end of the day. on the price, along with every other signing, nobody will even mention the price in a years time if he does the business on the pitch. good point about the comparison with modric aswell in terms of productivity. people don't like downing because he isn't flash like certain other players. however he's rarely injured (he played all 38 games for villa last season) and can put a ball on a sixpence for the likes of carroll which is exactly what we need. he's also incredibly versatile and can play down the right or even central midfield if needed.

the deal will be done in the next few days and i'm right behind it. i suspect we'll be looking at £20m.

Going to throw this one out there and expect many will ridicule me for it.

Owen Hargreaves is claiming to be fully fit and is posting daily video's on You Tube to prove that. An option to bing in on a pay as you play basis. Someone who would offer a bit of experience in the defensive MF role? Can hardly be classed a die hard MUFC man as he only played a handful of games for them.

Doesn't necessarily fit with the Fenway Sports way of thinking but on a pay as you play basis he may offer decent cover. Gives him a chance to prove himself as well so maybe a win win??

Let's face it, if Downing was a Liverpool player looking to move away we'd be saying '£20 million or tell em to fuk off'. Just pay the money, get him in training with his new teammates ASAP.
