Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

BBC:

Liverpool have appointed Damien Comolli as their director of football strategy.

The 38-year-old Frenchman spent three years as director of football at Tottenham, where he signed the likes of Gareth Bale and Dimitar Berbatov.

He will begin work at Anfield alongside Reds owner John Henry and manager Roy Hodgson with immediate effect.

"I am delighted to be joining Liverpool and look forward to working with John and Roy," said Comolli, who also spent seven seasons as a scout at Arsenal.

"I think we all realise there is a big job ahead, but we all share the vision that John has for rebuilding the club and bringing back the success that the supporters deserve."

Hodgson, who succeeded Rafael Benitez last summer, stated: "I am looking forward to working with Damien whom I have known for many years.

"We are engaged in an exciting project here and he will bring a lot to the table. We all want to see moves to strengthen the squad and support player development over the next few years.

"John Henry and I are totally united in delivering on that ambition."

Looks like a massive step in the right direction.  Monaco, Arsenal, Tottenham, comes with a great reputation for unearthing some gems.  Good foundations for the future.

Hiring a chimp would be better than we have at the moment and we desperately need to up our game in this area. Bale and Modric is a decent job at Spurs, both terrific footballers that would walk into our side. No one has a perfect track record but I assume this fellas is near the top in his own right looking at the sides hes worked for there and their record in recruting some fine young footballers at good prices. Over the last decade we have a shameful recruitment record with player after player coming in the door then out with little or no impact at the football club. You could probably count on on both hands lads that have come in and made a significant impact at Liverpool in the last 10 years and thats shocking when you imagine the number of footballers on the list.

If he was not great at Spurs how come many of their better players were hired during his time there?

One takeaway from this appointment is that we are moving in a direction which will inexorably lead to the replacement of Hodgson with a younger more innovative manager

Yeah cos Alan Sugar was well successful with Spurs. Ask any Spurs fan what they think of Alan Sugar?

Key comments (that matter) for me on twitter -

Oliver Kay The Times -

"Damien Comolli appointment at #LFC very interesting. Signifies move away from short-termism (which includes recent Poulsen/Konchesky deals)"

Henry Winter Guardian -

"#LFC need a chief scout with global connections so there's a role for Comolli."
