Well of course we COULD have been in the top four. Lets look at it sensibly though.

I'm going to be charitable and say that if Rafa were the manager we'd also have beaten Blackpool to go with our win against West Brom. Would we though have got a result at Old Trafford (where we did only once in Rafa's career,) and would we have won at Brum (where nobody else had for a year and we couldn't even beat them at Home for years). Would we have won at Man City (who also saw off Chelsea at Home), and would we have got a point with 10 men against Arsenal (we got beat at Home by them the season before)?

Yes we could have been top four, but my guess is that we would have had a very similar points haul to the one we've actually got. If anybody on here had said the things about Rafa under those circumstances that they've said about Roy there would have been uproar.

IMO rafa didn't leave because of performances - if left because of board politics and getting involved in trying to fight against the owners and not accepting the transfer budget situation . If he left because of performances then he would of gone as soon as season finished .

Good point
But you are talking as if he had all his faculties. "Not accepting the transfer budget situation" after squandering millions on dubious players. He had lost his reasoning and his credibility. In the end he reminded me of Humphrey Bogart in "The Caine Mutiny"

We have gone backwards which shows the club made the wrong choice IMO

Good point
But there is no evidence that we wouldnt be in the same position with Benitez. We shouldnt underestimate how low the squad was at the end of last season. We could in fact have been rooted to the bottom of the table with no points had he stayed.

Would stevie and Torres have stayed? No proof either way but the whispers arent usually wrong and everyone knew there were troucles in house

Many analogies and similies Red, but the question is this. If Hodgson were to be given six seasons plus access to all the money Benitez spunked, would he win more than two trophies, less than two trophies, or the same as two trophies? Would we finish outside the top four in two out of the six seasons, and have one title challenge, or would we do better or worse?

The simple fact of the matter is that nobody knows. Just like nobody yet knows whether Rafa will match Mourinho's achievements with exactly the same players.

The good thing is that given time, we'll all get a better idea

And how can people form opinions on what they think will happen- previous track record and what's currently happening and everything points to hodgson getting nowhere near winning any trophy or getting into the top 4 .

but you've formed an opinion on what you think?

I formed an opinion from his previous track record in 30 odd years of management and then seen that opinion enhanced by what I am seeing from Liverpool week in week out on the pitch

Well I have seen Rafa getting results against teams we shouldn't have - managed to beat the mancs last season without our two best players - I also believe we wouldn't be dominated by every team we have faced - he wouldn't of played two in the middle against three against city so I believe we would of for a win against Blackpool and Sunderland - that's 5 more points and a draw against city .

Do you mean something like giving a manager a season to turn around one bad season ?
