Fake' Togo team lost to Bahrain

The government in Togo has concerns that a fake national team from their country played an 'international' against Bahrain earlier this month.

Bahrain were surprised by the ease of their 3-0 victory in Riffa on September 7, coach Josef Hickersberger describing it as "boring" and their opponents as unfit.

However, that could be because the visitors were in fact not the official national team.
"Nobody has ever been informed of such a game," Togo sports minister Christophe Chao told Jeune Afrique.

"We will conduct investigations to uncover all those involved in this case.''

Chao said he will ask FIFA to investigate; however the world governing body said it was yet to receive an official complaint.

Hickersberger said: "They were not fit enough to play 90 minutes; the match was very boring.

"Basically it was not good for us because we wanted to get information about the strength of our team, especially playing with many of our professionals."

Bahrain are preparing for the West Asian Football Championships which begin on September 24.

Bahrain Football Association vice-president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa claimed that all the paperwork he received before the friendly was officially signed and stamped by the Togolese Football Federation.

He added that it had used an agent it had known for several years to arrange the match.

The Gulf Daily News reported that the 18-member team list issued minutes before kick-off differed completely from that provided via letter as the friendly was finalised, which comprised 20 players and included dates of birth and passport numbers.

Jaycee John hit a brace in the victory with Ismael Abdullatif adding a third for Bahrain
