Well it's been an OK match so far. Insua's been caught out a lot though.

Cavalieri – If Reina were to get injured the Brazilian would cost us a lot of points.

Insua – 5 million is good business

Gerrard – If he plays in central midfield next year we are going to lose the ball cheaply a lot in dangerous areas.

Shelvey – Should be going straight into the first team team squad rather than the reserves but is not a direct replacement for Masch. Plays the same role as Alonso and Lucus.

Ince, Eccleston, and Dalla Valle – Not ready to be in the first team squad and may never be.

HT 1-0 Shelvey done ok, but they are getting far too much room when they attack, no-one is sitting deep and Insua looks vulnerable too.

Shelvey/Gerrard hasn't worked so far as the central defenders are getting no protection.

Still getting to know each other, Ince's kid looks a bag of nerves but he's trying, Shelvey looks good, Ayala will learn from the :censored: up more than anything.
Gerry Marsden was friggin brilliant in the warm up. One of the best YNWA I've heard in a while.

Got a cracking stream on the eseason ticket, mind you i would have cancelled it months ago if they hadn't completely hidden the tab to do it on the website.

Got better as the half went on. Our best football has come when Gerrard, Shelvey and Cole have seen the ball. Cole stands out instantly as the most technical player in our team and I hope he gets another 10-15 minutes coz he doesn't look rusty at all. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in a Red shirt this season. I know it's very early on Shelvey, but i've been impressed with the lad, he's made a couple of errors but I really think we've got a player who can contribute this season. Hodgson has said Spearing will be a member of the first team squad this season but already I would put Jonjo ahead of him on the teamsheet. We've struggled in wide areas, Johnson looks like he needs to do some more running in training and I hope Fiorentina aren't watching Insua in this match. The young lads have struggled on the wing and I feel a bit sorry for Dalle Valle upfront on his own because it doesn't look like it suits his game.

I'd love to see Cole push out to the left and Aquilani come on and play in the hole for 10-15 minutes in the second half.

Well at risk of annoying the "but it's only a friendly" brigade, I think we've been disappointing. I say that knowing full well a lot of these lads won't figure in our first team, but I'm disappointed by our lack of shape. Gerrard and Shelvey are trying to do the same thing and there is no balance, the two wide lads haven't got into it and aren't working in any kind of unision with the central midfielders. Cole can't seem to make his mind up where he's playing and is droipping in ridiculously deep and leaving the kid on his own up top. Neither Johnson nor Insua are awake, and Cavalieri looks very suspect to me.

Hodgson ought to be into them at half time. The two wide lads need to tuck in when we haven't got it, Cole needs to sit in the hole and stay there, and Gerrard and Shelvey need to decide who goes and who stays. We also need to defend higher up and gamble that we'll get outrun, we look too stretched out.
