I see all the thickos are out in force again...

Comparing a 21 year old with players in their prime only really serves to show how stupid some people can be. Insua is better than anything else we've got at leftback since we released Aurelio. Now we have to buy 2 players instead of 1.

Whomever sanctioned this deal is a f*cking imbecile.

Why open up with this? The rest of your post is fair enough, it's reasonable to assume Insua will improve as he's only 21, but equally regardless of how old he is, he was our first choice left back. If we sell him and get somebody in who's better (admittedly an if) then it's normal to assume the team will improve.

I actually think the kid is better than most on here give him credit for, but 5 mill is in my opinion good money for him. As for who sanctioned it, well almost certainly the previous manager will have been heavily involved in the early stages of the negotiations before he left. I've no doubt that if the offer had been made to buy Insua for 5 million quid while he was still at the club, he'd have taken it in a heartbeat. Much the same as he was involved in the Benayoun sale, and fair play to him that was a good deal too.

I think it is imbecilic to go off on one, especially since we have to buy one LB already so what difference is it going to make having to buy two instead of one? Not a bleeding lot, except we'll have £5m to spend on one and Insua is no way worth £5m at the moment.

So he's 21, so what? If he isn't good enough he isn't good enough, there are plenty of other players we'd happily sell who are young simply because they aren't good enough.

I do agree with you mick about perhaps there being some exaggeration as to how bad he is, but frankly if someone offers you about £2m-£2.5m more than a player is worth and that player is only every likely to be worth £5m period, then you take it. Worst case scenario Carra spends pre-season at LB, or a kid, but I think Lando needs to gain a little perspective and chill

EDIT : oh and does the order in which we do things really matter?!?!? If we'd bought three or four LBs before selling Insua would it be any more 'clever' ?!?!? Were the 'imbeciles out in force' when we had no cover bought for Torres, a far worse offence?!?!?! And since we're commenting on it, not actually doing it, we're theorising and discussing, not instigating - and we would have a LB lined up if we were - so do one Lando  :D  :rasp

One of my problems with selling Insua now is that isn't he one of the players that would have counted as "home grown"  .  With the apparent rules that are supposed to take place pluss the fact that I don't think he was as por as some have made him out to be,  I think he'd be handy to keep around.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

Good point re home grown, but if a player isn't good enough then why keep him because he counts as home grown? Why not instead go out, buy a home grown replacement who is, and with £5m that shouldn't be too hard.

As aforementioned £5m is a very good price for a good full-back. Maybe Insua will improve, maybe he won't, but if we can get (closer to) the finished article then I'd do that. If it were a bid of only £2m-£2.5m then I'd probably decline and keep him, but we already need a LB anyway so to me it makes perfect sense - needing a LB and probably having to spend £5m to get a good one, having a LB worth maybe £2m but offered £5m, sell said LB and buy a £5m LB and you have only one LB and need one, but have a better one.

Or perhaps to put it in a way that EVERYONE can understand with a comparison. If someone offered £20m-£25m for Babel, would you sell? Of course, because you can go out and buy a replacement who is actually worth that with the money when Babel clearly isn't. That isn't rocket science now is it?!?!?!? (Lando) Sell an asset for more than it is worth, buy in an IMPROVED asset that is at least worth what you sold the asset at a profit for.

Here's the Insua link I originally incorrectly recalled as Sampdoria
, link via BBC gossip last week

Hope it is £5m

It seems a bit strange Owzat that you are very critical of alot of our players but when it comes to Kuyt you exaggerate his effectiveness on the pitch :D

Our first choice left back was injured pretty much all season.

We now need to buy 2 left backs. I think this is a decision we will regret pretty soon.

Fair enough mate, I've no bother with the analysis. I was commenting on the "idiots out in force" line. Unnecessary IMHO.

The idiots are in force, that's for sure. By idiots I mean those who negotiatied this deal. I hope there is a 'master plan' to all this. Like Lando said the lad is 21 and I don't think you will find anyone better in his age group. What happened to blooding in youngsters? Now we will probably end up getting some 28 year old crock freeby.

Like most things lets wait and see.

Insua for 5 million is something that for me is great business for us.
He is ok, that's about it.
He isnt good enough to be a first team regular and gets raped by most wingers. That amount of money for a full back is a decent fee.

Obviously we have to replace him, but it shouldnt be that difficult to find a better player in that position.

Hes not done enough to convince us that hes up to the job long term and so £5m is good enough money to purchase another and try again. Insua may go on and do alright but I doubt his value to anyone will increase above what weve just been paid for him. We let Riise go far too early thats for sure and weve not found one better since he was moved on.I wont even get started on that lad Dossena!  :no

Our 1st choice left back is still here....so lets all calm down shall we....

I am talking about agger. He finished the season playing as a left back...and he was way way way better than Insua ever was.
