"Watching Maradona's virtuoso assortment is like dipping into a box of chocolates and not knowing what treat is next. A Tévez surprise?

Messi truffle? Di Maria delight? Even Joachim Loew's fearless youths sound just a little awestruck when talking about them. "A different league to England," Miroslav Klose reminds his mates with sober intent. "

There was nothing to "get right" in light of last night's result. Why? Because nobody ever said Ronaldo has always done it or will always do it on the "big occasions". Rather that by being the Champions League top goalscorer and having scored against the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Porto in very important games that he's been a lot more effective on the "big occasions" than you originally made out. If you want to judge a player on international tournaments alone, fine - he hasn't "done it" - but in a better team who knows?, however that isn't what you originally said, hence you referred to his performances against "Chelsea, Arsenal, LFC...etc".

How many goals has the big man for the little occasion scored against LFC,Arsenal and Chelsea in how many games?

No point in remembering the odd goal here and there, look at the figures.

Brilliant against Hull, west brom etc but Danny Murphy probably has as good a record in the big games :D

I'm sure you enjoyed his step over against North Korea when 4-0 up and will probably youtube it as a sign that he is great, but a player isn't great if they disappear in big games and big tournaments.

See that pass yesterday? a simple pass could have been made but he did that very difficult trick with one leg over and then hitting the ball with the standing leg, but what's the point? the simple pass was on that would have achieved the same? vanity football that appeals to the masses.

You don't here people talking about the great goals Pele scored in the qualifiers for the 1970 world cup against equador.

Like I said, if you want to judge a player on how great he is purely by looking at his international performances you would have to conclude that Gerrard and Thierry Henry are sh!t. They are rightly regarded as true greats though because of what they achieved at club level. Simple as that really. In a similar vein, Ronaldo will be regarded as one of the best players ever to have played in the Premiership for what he did in the Manc's three title wins and Champions League triumph. FWIW, I think Messi is on a different level to any player in world football right now, but there are a few below him and Ronaldo is one of them.

Well in most important world cup news to date

PARAGUAY lingerie model Larissa Riquelme has, with one wonderful promise, won her country's team a legion of devoted fans - and given new meaning to the term national strip as well.
The Huffington Post has reported that Riquelme has vowed, if Paraguay wins the World Cup – and it's in the final eight – to strip off her strip and run naked through the streets with her body painted in national colours.

That should decide uncommitted male fans.

Riquelme, 24, has already made an impression at the World Cup, cheering on her heroes in a series of revealing outfits.

One picture with her mobile phone nuzzling, well-protected, in her ample bust has become particularly popular on the internet. Not sure if she'd hear it ring, though.

Sadly, Paraguay must play European powerhouse Spain in its quarter-final. If it wins, it will take on the might of Argentina or Germany.

That game could have especially high stakes – Argentina coach Diego Maradona has made a similar pledge.

The Post reported that Maradona had promised, during a radio show, to run naked through the center of Buenos Aires if his team won the World Cup.

While the amply proportioned Maradona has cut an absolutely entertaining figure during his team's inspired World Cup charge, but it's a figure probably best seen squeezed into a suit, not of the birthday variety.

Go, Paraguay, anyone

I think it's pathetic that you cannot even have admiration for someone like Cristiano Ronaldo because of who he used to play for. Get real

Cristiano is a brilliant player, he will be considered one of the world's all time greats? I doubt it, but that doesn't take away the fact that the man is a world class individual. If it wasn't for Ronaldo then Manchester Utd wouldn't have won three league titles and a Champions League trophy with two back to back finals thrown into the fray. So, he hasn't delivered at the World Cup, neither has Lionel Messi if you compare his club performances to his international performances, the same with Torres, Rooney, Drogba, Anelka and so on...

Of course rose tinted spectacles often help create an unnecessary sense of bias.

John Terry should be flung out of the England squad after this World Cup fiasco.

Firstly he tries to start a revolution in the England dressing room, he is then responsible for the four goals we conceded and now it appears his jealousy of losing the capitancy had gotten the better of him. What a disgraceful human being, I feel sorry for John Terry, what chance did he have of being a decent human being with parents like he has? Unfortunately, Britain is producing a mass of John Terry's at an alarming rate.

How did Michael Jordan earn his status as a great player? by making match winning shots with 2 seconds to go in championship finals! Tiger Woods - holding puts in the last few holes of majors.

Scoring 40 goals against Wolves, hull etc is how a team like Manu won the league last time, but their record against the top teams was terrible, because he usually disappears.

Players like Maradonna,Zidane,Baggio etc rose their game when the pressure was on.

Niall, I respect what you are saying, but I disagree. Henry didn't exactly turn up for the big matches did he throughout his career, does that tarnish his ability? No. Not every player is going to be like player x,y and z therefore comparisons are useless. I have never once said that Ronaldo will stand amongst the greats of football, but to me he is a fantastic player with an immense ability. I thoroughly enjoy his arrogance just as much as I enjoy his finesse on the ball and his trickery. He's a character. I like all sorts of footballers, I just do what you do and churn out Pele, Maradona, Romario etc. Why? Because I know you aren't going to get another Pele or another Maradona, another Puskas, another Beckenbaur, another Rudi Voller or Mark Van Basten - You'll not even get another Arjen Robben or Franck Ribery, why? Because players are their own individuals and play the game in their own way, so these all time greatest player lists are meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Would you turn down the chance of signing Ronaldo? No one who has the slightest clue about football would turn away Ronaldo from their team. I don't care whether he doesn't turn up for one leg of a Champions League, I care about what a player does throughout the course of the season and Ronaldo was the main reason that United enjoyed three successive Premiership triumphs and two back to back Champions League final appearances. Man Utd look half the team they were when Ronaldo was with them.

He's had a bad world cup, so what? It doesn't diminish his standings as a brilliant player.

I agree that he is a very good player and yes I'd love to have him at LFC.

I just think a great player has to perform in the tough games.

I think the Same about Henry and the only reason I didn't mention him is because people would think it was because of the hand ball.

I think the comparisons are legitimate, when the chips are down and you're a goal down in a final with 10 minutes to go, the great players can produce a bit of magic and then lead the team onto victory.

Great skills against West Brom is too low a bar (although it will help you win the league)
