yer i will never forget being told by all the tv stations that Nigeria will win this world cup and Cameroon would be in the final with them.
.........and they said that even before SA got the world cup.

what has happend is that a lot of African players have gone on to play for the like of France.

bit like other sports, how good could the Irish cricket team could be if they held on to their players instead of them going to England and other places.

There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Kenny Dalglish 1/2/2011

In fact, I'm still waiting the African revolution that was announced in 1990, when experts said when watching Cameroon and Nigeria that African teams would dominate the football of this decade.

:D

Fair point, mate.  TBPH, I said 'next' step not 'big' step, by which I simply meant that they reach the QFs rather than crash out of the Round of 16.  I still think they are a very long way from threatening to win the thing.  Still, I like seeing them do well.  I know Canada isn't remotely good enough to qualify for the WC so the US becomes my de facto home nation every 4 years.

Yet, I'm not one of these people that want to see the US do well so that Americans jump on the "soccer" bandwagon.  I think the game's doing just fine even if it isn't the most popular sport in the United States.  Obviously, there is a passionate minority--including the likes of The Good Yank and JoeTerp--that love the game but it's still not the majority's cup of tea.  It's been interesting to follow the interest for the World Cup among my Facebook friends, who are about 1/2 American and 1/2 Canadian.  There are a couple of fanatics like me that are following things closely but most show a passing interest at best and a few clearly hold the game in contempt because of instances of blatant diving, time-wasting etc.  As I was saying to a few friends, I don't know that football will ever truly catch fire as a spectator sport in N.A. because the rhythm and culture of the game is so fundamentally different from the mainstream North American sports, which loves high-scoring games, instant replays and other technological assistance, stoppages in play to build anticipation and, above all else, a clear winner at the end of the game (many N. Americans I know can't get their heads around the idea of ending the match with a draw).  No, I don't think football will ever truly capture the hearts and minds of the N. American sporting public for very long (and that's okay) but I still like to see the US do well in the World Cup.

Bob: Yep, it's true, you just said next step, I read too much. Fair post. If you looked my facebook it would seem I care fúck all about the world cup and it's not true. But that's due to here supporting too much Spain can wind up people, so you choose not to post VIVA ESPAÑAS to annoy half of your local contacts. Not that if you support Spain in facebook you get in trouble but the typical nationalist bantering about Spain losing/winning is boring as fúck. The football suffering here is among friends and family.

On the Capello video, yes it's very funny, he's bullying Pierce. :D Also funny he uses his Spanish to press the spanish speaking refs.

It's also interesting because most football fans give importance to their team when they have the ball, but look at what was dispairing Capello: Barry not pressing properly.

Certainly managers like him and Benitez and I'd say Mourinho too have insisted a lot about doing the things without the ball properly. That's one of the secrets of many succesful managers.

This is what happens when you come up against a team of clinical finishers and we have no one up front. We're passing the ball sideways beautifully, but actual goal threat - zero.

The standard of refereeing in this world cup has been DIABOLICAL.
