hopefully this is b0llocks, if we dont ring some changes then CL football is the target, and perhaps an unrealistic one at that. We'll have to wait and see, if it is that low tho, masch is off I reckon

If Rafa really get 5 m and he stay because he loves Liverpool or no club wants him ... then he have no choice to sell the "stars" like Torres (70m) , SG (30m) , Javier Mascherano ( 30m ) , Pepe Reina ( 25m ) . :(

Or maybe he has been told, you have the players, get the best out of them, after all, this is your team. If you can win the champs league with the dross Houillier left, you can do more with this squad. In a way im hoping this is true, all he has is £5mill. This way it forces rafas hand to re-think his tactics for the coming season. We lost out last season because of Rafa. Of doubt, there is none in my mind. We are lacking one Alonso, I can sit here and type "thats not my fault", I wanted to keep him.

No, Rafa being the tactical genius he is, he has enough to work with, so work with it if the £5mill budget is true.

Gerrard and Torres have both said we need new players, surely the club cannot afford to ignore the opinions of their two single greatest assets?  Surely??   Errrr???

I think it will be a case of wait and see as to how much money we have, Hopefully if we can clear some of the dead wood (Riera etc) and we do have 15 million then whoever the manager is will be able to bring in some quality.

I think you're massively over-optimistic thinking hoping we'll get £25m for Reina. He is a very good keeper, but I doubt many sides will be offering more than £10m-£12m for him, even CITEH. You can normally get a very good keeper for less than £10m

Most expensive keepers

£30m Buffon (Juventus 2001)
£10.5m Peruzzi (Inter Milan 1999)
£9m Gordon (Sunderland 2007)
£7.8m Barthez (Man Utd 2000)
£7.5m Pagliuca (Inter Milan 1994)
£7m Cech (Chelsea 2004)
£6m Marchegiani (Lazio 1993)
£6m Van Der Sar (Juventus 1999)
£6m Kirkland (Liverpool 2001)
£6m Wright (Arsenal 2001)
£6m Reina (Liverpool 2005)
£6m Given (Man City 2009)

Although I've had to add Given, don't think there have been any others, but only two keepers have cost over £10m - perhaps because Real Madrid don't buy big money keepers and defenders

If we wait a season we can get the player for around 500k at tribunal as he's out of contract.

Of course that gives Rangers a year to try and get him to re-sign and for other clubs to approach him, but if he really wants to come here he can wait a season.

I'm not even sure he's good enough to be honest from what I've seen.  I certainly wouldn't be paying 2.5 mil for him.

I'm not sure CB is a high priority, our defensive failings are down to system and two full-backs who fail in their defensive duties as much as, if not more than, our CBs. We have four decent CBs, unless Skrtel is on his way out in which case we may take a hit on that transfer fee.

The transfer budget isn't the be all and end all, we can sell players and frankly giving Rafa a big budget will only encourage him more with his recent wastefulness. If we were playing a footy management game, or even a manager in real life, with a limited budget, or just say the budget Rafa usually gets of circa £40m, I doubt we'd go spending £20m on an injury prone CM or £17.5m on a full-back, or £3m on a benchwarming keeper. We'd look at the full-back on offer, see if we can get a good full-back for less and fully investigate our options before committing such large fees on single players that would absorb near 50% of our budget.

I would consider selling one big name player, preferably Mascherano rather than Gerrard or Torres, but it would raise big money with the greater good of the side in mind. We always go through the same routine in the summer of listing half a dozen fringe players, unliked players etc and talking up possible fees. All too often half don't go and those that do we end up short changed. What Rafa wastes any money on makes me shudder to think, so far the targets are perhaps a reflection of us playing in the EDL

I believe we need to sign a LB, CM and ST and we'll be fortunate to get a half decent LB/CM/ST with £5m.

That said, I believe that current squad is good enough to finish higher than seventh, it depends on Rafa's approach, but if Spurs and Man City strengthen heavily this summer it will be hard to see anything beyond a fifth place finish.

Anyone who reckons our current squad is a top four squad is delusional. We need heavy investment and we need to start blooding in youngsters. Gerrard is 30, Benayoun is 30, Carragher is 32, Maxi is 29. They're all nearing the end of their careers.
