What about the original Metropolis? After all, it is the first Sci-Fi film ever!

And concerning 2001, did you know that HAL got his name from moving the letters of IBM one character forward each (I becomes H, etc...). Should help in a few pub quiz comps.  :D

I thought Blade Runner was a classic. Shame abou the narration, that was only added because the yanks didn't understand the film.

Starwars is part a film history and is the Alien Quadrilogy.

As for the thing, john carpenter is a master of shock!
Fave line has to be the ending Kurt Russel " Yeah, and f**k you too "  Classic!

Here is some more trivia for you. George Lucas really wanted to be Luke Skywalker, but when he realised he couldn't be the young Jedi, Lucas came up with the name Luke S. Cheeky.  :D

Luke was always going to be called Luke Starkiller but the name was dropped before filming started!

the thing was a re-make of the original 50`s film the thing from another world. the 80`s one was a lot more gory but the 50`s one has much more atmosphere and is ten times better imo.
the films made in the 50`s were made in an atmosphere of atom bombs, ufo sightings and anti communist reds under the bed type paranoia and you can almost feel it in those old movies.
interesting you mention the last line of the film, in the original the survivors get the radio working and they tell the world of their plight, and the bloke warns - watch the skies, keep watching the skies. much more subtle and ominous and it doesnt need a swear word for effect either.

How could we leave out Ghostbusters!
Okay, so it may not strictly be Sci-Fi, but it's such a good film, and the sequal is worth a shout too. It's a bit more   :D  than  :alien:  :D  , but it definatley deserves a mention.
