Cheesecakery, don't get offended but when did James played his best? I don't think he was as his peak at Liverpool. Perhaps he is playing better now but he was 'Calamity' James during his time at Liverpool. Perhaps we bought him a few years too early.
Care to clarify?

i would Clemence cos in his time (which was nearly 20 years before mine) he was the best goalie around and better than keepers we have had more recently i.e. David crappy James, but agree about Kirkland he has the potential to become a class keeper and will be England No 1 in the future no doubt.

James was at his goalkeeping best at liverpool , if you care to look at the statistics you wil see that he let in many less goals in than clemence did on average.
and made less blunders than bruce ,
sky sports only concentrated on his bagpusses rather than his world class saves

Clemmo was outstanding (so was the defence in front of him) he was probably our safest keeper but for sheer ability I go for Brucie  I know he dropped some clangers but he was special .  :D

i think david james is harshly called calamity. I mean the guy only had one really bad season. Remember 95/96 he kept 26 clean sheets, that was the best in country at the time. And this was when schmichael and seaman were at their peaks!

yeah but i'd have more confidence at euro 2004 if he wasn't in the nets. it says a lot about the lack of english keepers in the premiership.

To be fair to James, he is a better 'keeper now, and definitely better than whe he was the Liverpool custodian.

Perhaps he will play well at the Euro'04 championships, but even at his peak, he is not as good as Shilts for England.

Yeah, there was a time when english goalies were the best in the world..........what happend ???
James was/is a better keeper than his nickname would suggest, but no where near the ability of Clemmo and Brucie.
Having said that, goalies go on forever and he has some miles left in him to get better. He has not had the best of defences playing in front of him....wherever he's been  :(

Why do we have so many problems with keepers? James decided to come good after he left anfield, Westerweldt was sh1t, dudek has too many dodgy moments and kirkland is too injury prone!!
Steve Gerrard Gerrard,

He's quick and he's f*cking hard,

At least our 'keepers were not prone to being lobbed from a distance on numerous occassions like someone who calls himself "Safe Hands" in his autobiography.

He even let a goal against Slovenia (if I am not mistaken) directly from a corner when he was England's no.1!

It was a pity we don't have a player who can lob from a distance...otherwise we could have used this tactic to score against Arsenal when "Safe Hands" was their 'keeper...

It has to be Clemence, followed by Grobelaar. I can vaguely remember the 76-77 season, (I was 6), but that year he only conceded 16 goals on our way to the League championship. great days. I've a good feeling about next season, we've looked dead sharp this last month.
