The more you watch him , the more he isn't a defensive midfielder , he has that passing quality but his position compromises that because hes usually quite back and any misplaced pass will put us under pressure . I think that is why he plays the sideways passes but when hes further up , occasionally he does try the harder ones ,an example would be against newcastle for gerrard
