We'll need a big squad next season, so if we can get some good players on free transfers to pad the squad out, that's great. It also means we're saving money for other signings. I'm very happy with the signing and will be equally happy if we can get a few more quality freebies, then splash the cash on a few stars who'll make that extra difference.

I think he'll do a job in the first team aswell when needed. Wasn't he Boros player of the year for the last 2 seasons?

I just hope its not at the expense of gerrard!..cos to- days papers are full of speculation that rafa is not convinced gerrard wants to stay?,,,or that might be what they want us to believe its strange that with the pre- season games not far away and all we have so far is one player on a "free" and another on "loan" where are these big signings we wewre led to believe were coming? I think rafa knows he has to sell stevie that would release £35-£40 million cos i dont see messers moores and co stumping up the "moo-lash" do you.  It would be a big blow if he does go i dont think you can buy that kind of passion and drive he has for any amount of money if he does go then this board should hang their heads in shame they will blame stevie and try to placate us fans with the money to bring in new players.   :veryangry

I'm still waiting for some more "high-profile" signings, though. I mean, Rafa hasn't really spent anything when you think about it. Diouf and Diarra probably covered most of Reina's speculated transfer fee, when he finally puts pen to paper. Signed Gonzalez on loan for the time being. Zenden came on a free.  And a couple youngsters, I think. Taking into account that most of the players we signed will be making around the amount per week that was taken off the wage bill with our departures...we haven't spent much money. Agent fee's and what not mostly so far. Unless I am forgetting something...

I agree with big signings, but I would only want to see us bring in three or four big signings rather than six or seven, because that is a shaky risk, with ego's and pre-madonna's running around the place and to be honest with you Jose Reina is a big prolific goalkeeper and is admired by many, not just in La Liga, but I agree we need a couple more world class players and we should be alright, but we don't need too many considering we won the Champions League with a team that finished 5th. Plus we don't exactly have a huge budget to spend from either £30million was all we were given and when you have certain areas that need improvement and you have the job of bulking up your squad, the money soon gets divided. I think once Benitez gets a team he wants he will add a couple of prolific players to his team aslong as they have the right mentality though and will work for the team, which cancels out most of Real Madrid's players.  :D

I think Zenden isn't a bad player and for a free you have to love that, but he is a mercenary and it wouldn't surprise me if he signed a two year deal and then left on a free to join somone else.

If he doesn't spend all of his transfer budget this season, does the unused amount get rolled-over into next season?

I think Zenden is a good signing, especially on a free, I was a big fan of his at when he was at Barcelona, I haven't seen too much of him at M'Boro but I thought he was good at Chelsea but that wasn't the right club for him, I'm sure he'll enjoy life at Anfield just like Xabi and Garcia.  I think Riise will move back to LB and Zenden on the left, which to me would be a good wide combo :)

If I'm wrong you can chuck this post at me in months to come but I think Zenden is gonna prove to be an outstanding signing for us . Whenever I saw 'Boro (ok not that often)Zenden was always the player that caught me eye. Rafa hasn't signed him JUST because Bolo's on a free.

Don't think you need to defend yourself there, woof - he's a good player who has played in the Prem for a while and should do a decent job for us. The fact that we got him for free just makes the deal that bit sweeter.

How much did Chelski pay, £6M? Cracking bit of business if you ask me..... :)

Only made the "chuck this post at me " remark as some members in other threads seriously underate Zenden , even you refer to him as a "good player " whereas I think he is a very very good player .
Fingers crossed ,surrounded by the quality we have at LFC will hopefully bring out the real quality that I believe he has .

Do you think he will start in the first 11 tho? As much as I do think he is a good player, I do also think that he will be brought in to bolster primarily the centre mid, which we all know will be filled majority by Gerrard and Xabi.

The other thought that has crossed my mind is based around Kewell. I'm wondering if Rafa has placed him in the 'last chance saloon' and seeing if his injury problems continue. If they do, i'm thinking he may offload him without much loss to the cover in left mid.

My initial response would be to expect Rafa to play him wide left that being his original and preferred position , but the uncertainty over Gerrard does make me wonder if Rafa is considering him to play center mid alongside Alonso.

i really do think he can do a job 4 us at boro he was class but speakin of kewell i think the TNS game can get him back on track he has been poor for alot of this season but if he scores a few goals against TNS or even just gets his confidance back from a good preformace it cud spark off a good season 4 him provided he stays fit and Rafa really does rate him i mena u would nt start a player in 2 cups finals if u did nt want him
