I think we have a very good chance of winning the title this season, but I'm not sure we are quite ready yet. We've made several changes to the team this season and whilst Bellamy and Pennant looked settled Gonzales and Paletta don't (which is what I expected) and that will no doubt take time. We also signed Auerlio and Kuyt and they too could take a while to settle in, so who knows how long that will take. It could be instant or it could take a season, but I definitely think we can go toe to toe with Chelsea all season, but as I said I'm not sure we will, but I wouldn't put anything past us this season, Every fan in 2004/05 season expected a bleak season and we ended up lifting the Champions League so you never know.
I think if we are to win the title we'll need the likes of United and Arsenal to struggle and battle it out for 3rd and 4th place and focus solely on Chelsea, but knowing United and Arsenal you can't count them out of anything, plus there's the added threat of Spurs as well who seem to be slowly building a solid team.
We'll need to win all our small games so no loses against Fulham or Charlton and no 2-2 draws with teams like Bolton and Birmingham, as well as no late goals conceded like the one at Old Trafford.
We need the players to be consistent in their play and we'll (as I said earlier) need the players to gel and adapt instantly to the league.
You raise good points about Chelsea, especially the central midfield partnership of Ballack and Lampard, it simply won't work and although it's too early to say (I'm taking a wild prediction) I think it will restrict Lampard's role of going forward and scoring goals, it seems that job will have to be shared out between the pair. If Lampard and Ballack play in the same team then I can't see Lampard being able to have the freedom he does with Chelsea at the moment and as you saw in the Charity Shield match it did restrict Lampard's role of going forward and he's wasn't really in the match. It wasn't until Ballack hobbled off that Lampard started to look a bit more lively and set up Shevchenko to make it 1-1. For what it's worth I think Shevchenko (providing he can adapt to the Premiership) will get Chelsea the goals that Lampard has been getting Chelsea and with the right service he might well get them more than what Lampard manages to get Chelsea. Shevchenko showed no signs of lacking intelligence on sunday as he was making clever runs and his cool composure in front of goal will could well be the deciding factor of who walks away with the league.
It will also be interesting to see if Mourinho decides to rotate Lampard and Ballack or play both in the same starting line up. Because if he does play both that could well give us an advantage and prove to the world that the "Special one" is too far up his own backside.
All in all I anticipate a good season, I think we'll challenge all the way, providing we don't slip up, but I'm not sure if our mass of new signings will all be able to settle down this season and function properly, we shall see....
