The great anfield summer clearout - Should they stay or should they go?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby RedSi35 » Tue Mar 22, 2011 8:20 pm

So here they are................in all their glory, the current LFC squad.

On paper we have some decent quality, but like paper its a bit thin really, so what with the season soon coming to a close, the club has the oppurtunity to clear out any potential dead wood.

From the list below, delete the players you think should STAY at the club and leave the ones you are happy to see go ( leave a half decent reason as well if you can )

well that didn't take long

just to not a few things - from 35 down I have absolutely no idea, I've heard bits and bobs about some of them but haven't seen them play so I just left their names on - except young Robinson that is

I really like Agger and Aurelio but its down to their injury records that they're on there. I think Agger's top drawer btw and I'd keep him if his injury record picked up

I was also torn with Joe Cole - I think £5m might be a good piece of business, he's hasn't looked like the Joe Cole we know since he signed so I don't think he'll be missed but his potential makes me think twice

I'm torn with Darby as well but currently with Notts Country doesn't exactly speak volumes for the lad, esp with Kelly and Johnson in the side

Dunno half of them but from ones I have seen play then I would cut these players for starters. One or two based on a value for money basis, some big earners there not earning their corn so I would trim that wage bill back and get shut personally.

why do you say get rid of Johnson, just out of curiousity...?

from my POV we need to get rid of those who aren't good enough, starting with the worst. Johnson is more than adequate cover for Kelly at the very least, plus there's still a lot of debate about his potential at right wing...

Maybe we can get some football discussion around here after all :D

They can all go. Not good enough or too injury prone/past their best to be of use.

I dont think Johnson has done enough at Liverpool considering the size of his fee and the big wage he will command. Fair enough hes standing in at left back and doing a reasonable job but I dont recall him lighting up a game or standing out at any point for us. Hes not all that, well in my humble opinion, but plenty will disagree Im sure. I think we can lose him and put the money to better use thats all, bring another in, same goes for Cole there, massive coin and nothing in return.Bet that Jovanovic is on a few bob as well being a free transfer and that.

Some decent talent in the reserves/youth setup so they deserve a crack at the first team.

Anyone out on loan i think hasnt really got the full support of the club so are probably considered surplus to requirements.

Johnson i think needs a serious career check. He has talent i think we can all see that, but i dont think its at right back. Kelly has won that spot ( deservedly so ). But Kelly by trade is a centre half, but does he aspire to be a right back?

I think once Kelly is fit and we have some decent left back cover, we may see Johnson at right midfield, he would be an asset there, he has pace and can stick in a half decent cross, his decent defensive ability will help Kelly out as well.

3. Konchesky - Should never have been signed
10. J Cole - Not performing, high wage, get rid
14. Jovanovic - Need someone with a better cross and speed
17. Maxi - Maybe could be a decent bench player, but cash in
22. D Wilson
24. Ngog - Could be a useful backup, but I'd rather someone
              better

28. Poulsen - Useless
35. Coady
36. Irwin
38. Flanagan
41. Hansen
42. Gulacsi
43. Bouzanis
44. Mendy
45. Ince

49. Robinson

Keeping most of the youngsters, it cant hurt to have them on the team.  I'd also want to keep aurelio because lets not forget when fit what a fine LB he can be.  Maybe see what Insua is up to for another season, but those on loan can go

Here's my pick: I don't know how good the youth players really are so I give them a chance but the first team has a decent clean out.

I chopped Kuyt simply because I can't see his crosses/passes being good enough to setup goals. He is not a winger & we really need to sign someone in that area.

Get rid: 3. Konchesky
           14. Jovanovic
           17. Maxi
           28. Poulsen
           32. Darby
           - Degen
           - El Zhar

Maybu get rid: 5. Agger
                    6. Aurelio
                   10. J Cole
                   16. Kyrgiakos
                   24. Ngog
                   - Aquilani
                   - Insua

Well I think that we can all agree about the players that I think we should definitely get rid of. They're just not good enough for a team that tends to challenge Champions League spot.

As for the maybu's, I'd actully want to keep most of them, but there are big reasons why we should get rid of them. For example, Agger and Aurelio are fantastic players, but they're always injured, and we dont want players that cant play for the most of the season, despite their quality.

Joe Cole has been very bad for us but we should maybu give him a bit more time becouse we all know how good he was not too long ago. His wage though is too high for a player who doesnt perform well at the moment.

Kyrgiakos is an OK player, good enough for the bench, but his contracnt is running out and if we sign a good, quality centre back in the summer, I think that there will be no room for him.

N'Gog might also be at least good enough to be a backup, but I think that we can and should find someone better and younger. Even if we do though, it wouldnt hurt if we keep N'Gog too, as we dont have too many strikers.

Aquilani is a good player but I think that he doesnt belong in Liverpool. He doesnt want to be here anyway. But I wouldnt sell him for just any price. We spent a lot of money on this player and I think that we should get at least half of the money back.

We are also short on full backs and I think that Insua is better than Konchesky. I think that we should bring back Insua and use him as backup, especially If we dont sign a full back this summer and continue playing Kelly on the right and Johnson on the left.

Long post but who cares!! :D

I agree with getting rid of Agger. Quality defender, talent wise, there is no doubt but injury wise he is constantly injured. We would be better off getting a more reliable defender, and if we can get a good sum for him, even better.

3. Konchesky
6. Aurelio
10. J Cole (torn here...if we can get a good fee for him, let him go. But I do think that eventually under Kenny he's got a good chance of regaining some of his skill. Might be worth keeping on til the end of the first transfer window next season.)
14. Jovanovic
17. Maxi
24. Ngog
28. Poulsen

I really can't speak for any of the youth players. Obviously we should keep the "stars," (Sterling, Suso, Pacheco, etc) but I don't see much of a reason to ditch any of the others yet.
