Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Sky Sports News babe Charlotte Jackson may be a Liverpool fan - but her views on Fernando Torres are unlikely to go down well at Anfield.

In an interview for the Mail On Sunday's Live magazine, the presenter admits even Tottenham Hotspur might be a better place for the Spain striker than on Merseyside.

Revealing a recent conversation with Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton, Jackson hardly got the feeling that Torres was untouchable as the club have been at pains to point out.

'I saw Martin Broughton at Chelsea's Player of the Year dinner, and he refused to tell me we weren't going to sell Torres, said the 30-year-old.

'He said: "We'll let him go to the World Cup. At the moment he's still on board, but it's going to take three years to turn the club around, and at his age..." If it's going to take three years to turn the club around, that's going to coincide with the peak of his career, and he'll want to be playing in Europe. So he should probably go and join Tottenham.'

Sportsmail have already revealed that Chelsea - the team Broughton supports - are lining up a £70million bid for Torres, while Manchester City's interest was all-but-scuppered by their failure to qualify for Champions League football.

The former Setanta presenter also admitted it was difficult to be a calm impartial broadcaster when her team were in the news.
Sort it out: Fernando Torres wants to focus on the World Cup, frustrated by Liverpool's troubles that have cast doubt over his future at the club

'It's hard not to react when your team is doing well,' she said. ;Celebrating on-air would not go down well. When Liverpool scored against Man Utd I couldn't resist a quick celebration - off the air - but I was warned not to, just in case I did it on-air by mistake.

'I mean, everyone supports a team and looks for them to win - the problem is that Liverpool are very high profile. If I supported Tranmere I could probably get away with it.'

However, she can be excused for cheering on England in South Africa this summer and will is optimistic about the country's chances.

''I think we will win the World Cup,' she said. 'Everyone always says we fall victim to the hype and the tension, but Fabio Capello has instilled a massive sense of confidence and self-belief.

'We've got a really good draw, although I am a bit worried about the game against the United States, purely because of first-match nerves.'

The Daily Mail are scraping the barrel for sources, aren't they? Just more sh*te to fill a page.

I can't honestly believe he would say that, especially after his recent LFC.TV interview, which I saw, and he clerly said we do not need to sell him or Gerrard and had no intention of doing so.

If we were Benitez would have left by now.

Unfortunately, Torres staying or going is going to run and run this summer, i hope he stays but if he doesn't then so long as the manager gets most of the money to reinvest then hopefully he could buy two top class strikers for the price of Torres.

I'd like him to stay next year at Liverpool to assess whether liverpool is temporarily going down or the opposite(flying high again)if he loves to stay at liverpool. As being a top striker in the world,it is normal you would like to enjoy champion league football or play in a team bigger than liverpool like barcelona or real madrid or like to earn a better money while he is young. If liverpool believes that they can turn things around again, they should keep their star player for the future because he is still young.Even if you want to offload your player,u should consider when he is 28 or 29 then u can sell him.

If I were a liverpool manager at the moment and have the right to the player management,I would sell Gerard(chased by real),Macherano(bacelona),Bennayoun(chelsea),Carragher,Acqualani,Kagiakos.I will let all of them go.Then I will reform the team that can be really competitive and titile challenger again.

I guess,I can get around 85 millions ₤ for selling of them.

I will buy Silva(25 m₤),Aneista(27m₤) from barcelona,Essien(27m₤),Alex(15m₤ option) from chelsea
Mcarthy from Blackburn

the team will be :

                                 Reina

Johnson/Degen      Alex/Skrtel    Agger          Insua

                               Essien

Rodriguez/Pacheco      Aneista                    Silva

                      Torres         Mcarthy

That team will be a title winning buy I guess.Liverpool can afford to change like that I think

Although with Rafa's track record we may well end up paying over the odds for an ordinary but experienced striker.

Problem with a lot of LFC fans is they think a star player leaving is the end of the world. It wouldn't be, we have to move on. Fowler left, Owen left, Alonso left. It's not as if we were/are winning titles with them, shows the TEAM is more important than one or two individuals as those individuals can't carry the team alone and sometimes having a star player can be detrimental to the team in terms of other players rely too much on them.

Ronaldo left the mancs, they coped. We should be looking for that kind of fee IF he has to leave, or wants to. Torres isn't stupid, he'll know what is going on and who could blame him for moving to a big Spanish club to win trophies. Since his arrival we've won feck all and his career isn't exactly littered with winners medals from his time at Atletico. If he went to citeh then I'd blame him to some degree, they're not exactly top of the league (material).

Could be a crunch season in many ways, Rafa has to make whatever system he employs work - assuming he is still here. Does he stick with the current formation and bring in cover for Torres, or does he bring in a partner for Torres and switch to 4-4-2? I think he'll persist with the tried and tested, either way if Jovanovic is the only incoming striker then we may be worried either way, Keane wasn't the right signing for me, but I think most agree we needed a striker and still do. Just a shame if you're going to gamble big money on a spudz striker (recent past or present) that it was Keane and not Defoe or Bent. Jovanovic has a decent scoring record in Belgium, nothing to brag about mind, but his international record is ok - 9 goals in 24 appearances. The opposition he scored against is ok, 3 vs Romania, 2 vs Bulgaria, 1 vs Austria, 1 vs Finland then 1 each against the minnows of Faroes and Cyprus. Finland are a decent side, Jovanovics' goal scored in Helsinki. Finland finished third in their group, lost at home only to Russia and drew with Germany home and away. Their only two qualifying losses were both to Russia and both 0-3, had they managed a win at home then they'd have leapfrogged Russia into the play-off place. They've been a decent side for a while, finished (no pun intended) above Greece in England's 2002 qualifying group and Greece went on to win the Euros in 2004. They held England to 0-0 and Germany to 2-2 in Finland, had they sneaked winners in those two games they'd have topped the group!

I hope Torres stays, but if we can get £60m+ for him and bring in 2+ quality players then it would be for the greater good of the team. Having won nothing (major) for three seasons and finished 7th last season I think we can't avoid the inevitable vultures hovering over our better players. I'd rather sell Mascherano and/or Gerrard before Torres, but it would very much depend what kind of prices each would fetch and what could or would be done with any money available from the fees. Many on here talk of clauses, yet they don't mention that if we did get £30m for Alonso or Torres or Gerrard went for £30m+ that a lot of that might be in instalments or clauses...............................

This story about Broughton is also in The Times today in a piece by Tony Barrett. If Torres goes then so will Gerrard and God knows who else. We really are up the creek without a paddle and the boat is leaking fast.
If Twit and Tw@t can't see that if Torres and Gerrard go , then their chances of selling us at a profit , also go ,then they are even more stupid than any of us thought !!!

I am 99% certain he won't go to spudz, that is some crazy cr ap based on them finishing fourth. They have a wage limit that stops a lot of big names going there, their record transfer fee is £16.5m or thereabouts and I would think anything spudz would offer would be bettered in fee and wages by a host of bigger clubs. I'm betting even if spudz smashed their transfer record fee and offered £40m then the mancs, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona would all come in with the same or better bids. spudz may be "in the big time" in terms of playing in the biggest European competition, but they aren't "big time" in terms of transfer fees and wages.

It's more likely spudz will spend the summer staving off bids for their better players than robbing other clubs of their's

For sure,Liverpool midfield needs a big change. The foundation like Gerrard needs to be replaced with the player like Andreas Aniesta with so much quality on the ball and comfort with the ball. How much it will cost I am not sure or barcelona will sell him out.But at least if i were the official man and the authority I will approach the player like him and silva.

Maybe I am dreaming about fetching  Essien but liverpool really needs the alonso-looks-like-player like essien maybe his long pass may not be as great as xabi he is a great defensive and attacking midfielder.we need the player like him.

For the attack,we know we have no money but need quality player. So I choose Benny Mcathy or Fabiano from savilla(the latter one may be expensive).Benny won't cost too much.

Losing quality midfielders didn't do any good to the team in the past, and losing Gerrard won't do any good to the team neither.

Wenger sold Kolo Toure and Adebayor and Arsenal look better for it.

1. you do not sell your star player, soul and heartbeat of the team
2. why the bloody hell would we sell carragher??
3. no one is going to buy silva for less than 30 million and probably more
4. there is absolutely no way on earth that barcelona will sell iniesta and even if they did i would not expect him to go to a non CL team
5. it is highly unlikely that chelsea would sell us essien and alex

apart from that its a great plan

In my opinion,Gerard alone can't work out in the midfield. In the Benitez reign, why he got his reputation to this stage a lot depends upon paring with the player like alonso. You can be assured of alonso won't lose the ball very easily and can spread the ball to the right player and to the spot precisely and at the same time an enormous cover for the defense as well and accompany the attack as well when in counter attack. The most important thing about xabi is he is very cool on the ball and have a team spirit. These virtues are very important for the players playing in the big team. You can see barcelona's xavi, arsenal's fabregas,ex-arsenal captain vierra, chelsea's essien. They are all ease with the ball and they can control the ball very well in their foot. The player with that skill is needed in the liverpool football squad.
We can't reply lucas in defense or attack for a big team.Gerard also lacks some quality like what i mention earlier. He can't control the ball very well or is not ease with the ball or he is not big enough to play for the attacking midfield role.I prefer Aniesta.I don't mean to oppose any of u.I am also a liverpool fan. That 's my opinion

NANNY RED wrote:Martin Broughton, the Liverpool chairman, is reported to have said that it might be better for Fernando Torres to leave because it could take up to three years to sort the club out.

The comments were allegedly made to Charlotte Jackson, the Sky Sports News presenter, who disclosed details of a conversation she had with Broughton, a Chelsea supporter, at the West London club’s Player of the Year awards dinner at Stamford Bridge this month.

“I saw Martin Broughton at Chelsea’s Player of the Year dinner and he refused to tell me that we weren’t going to sell Torres,” Jackson said. “He said, ‘At the moment, he’s still on board, but it’s going to take three years to turn the club around, and at his age . . .’ ”

Sources at Liverpool insist that Broughton’s position on Torres’s future has been made abundantly clear by a series of on-the-record interviews in which the British Airways chairman was adamant that the 26-year-old forward will not be sold this summer.

But the fact that he is alleged to have suggested in a private conversation that the immediate future at Anfield is so bleak that it may be better for Torres to seek pastures new will increase concern among Liverpool supporters that the club’s prized asset could depart.

Torres has attempted to put all talk about his future on the back burner until after the World Cup, but is privately deeply concerned about the direction Liverpool are heading under the ownership of Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr. Although it remains highly unlikely that Manchester City, who have expressed an interest in signing the Spain forward, could tempt him from Anfield, Chelsea are also monitoring the situation and the chance to join the Barclays Premier League champions would give Torres food for thought.

When Liverpool played Chelsea at Anfield this month, Broughton decided it would be best, given his allegiances, if he did not attend the game, so the fact that he was at a dinner celebrating Chelsea’s season will not be of any great surprise. But the contents of a conversation he is said to have had at the event will cause a stir, particularly the suggestion that it could be three more years before Liverpool are able to get their house in order.

Pepe Reina has already revealed his belief that Liverpool will have to revise their targets for next season in the event of a buyer not being found to oust Hicks and Gillett, and the goalkeeper’s pessimistic view has been supported by Jamie Carragher, who believes that a lack of spending power in the transfer market makes any thoughts of a title challenge being made appear fanciful.

“Clubs like Real Madrid and Inter Milan can just throw £100 million at new players if they don’t win the title,” Carragher, the Liverpool defender, said. “But Liverpool can’t do that. We have to build. We can’t just raid the transfer market.

“Next season, rather than thinking too much about the title, we have to concentrate on getting back in the top four.”

Chelsea are expected to step up their efforts to sign Yossi Benayoun this week, confident that an offer in the region of £6 million could be enough to convince Liverpool to sell.

Benayoun has been unsettled for several months and had been keen on a move to Russia, with CSKA and Spartak Moscow believed to be interested in acquiring the Israel midfield player.

But Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, has jumped to the front of the queue for Benayoun and is hopeful of signing him before the World Cup.

Rangers have informed Liverpool that they will have to increase their initial £2 million offer for Danny Wilson if they want to sign the 18-year-old central defender. “We are currently waiting to hear back from Liverpool after we rejected their original offer,” Walter Smith, the Rangers manager, said.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol....ce#none

If this is true it is shocking. First and foremost, why is the Chairman of LFC at Chelsea's POY Awards? As Oliver Kay says, it is at the very least, it is ill-judged. I think most Liverpool fans accepted his decision to stay away from the Liverpool Chelsea game as it showed he was willing to act with a certain amount of impartiality, which is probably hard as he is openly a true Chelsea fan. What isn't acceptable is to have it one way and not the other.

Secondly, if true, why is he discussing anything related to the club with a reporter when he clearly stated that he would not talk to the press on this matter.

What makes it even worse is that if Torres were to leave then Chelsea is one of his more likely destinations.

The whole thing stinks. I know we have to get angry at the right people and his comments may be true but this isn't right. I'm completely sick of this drip feeding of depressing information to the media. If you are on the Liverpool Board or in any position of power, keep your f*cking mouth shut.

I'd either like to hear a full denial or a comprehensive apology and  an acceptance from Broughton that what he has done is wrong. He should also agree that while Chairman of Liverpool he refrains from buddying up to anyone at Chelsea, especially when they are trying to buy our f*cking players.
