he just cannot continue to be played on the right.
bags of pace and potential but all wasted in that position.his lack of form is down to him being played out there.
he's not comfortable playing there and it shows.

i voiced doubts before we signed him, but I hoped that i was wrong....afterall, his stats at Villa suggested he was a good buy.

Yet, after 6 months, he's a shocking buy for 20 million. Gerrard put in 3 crosses today and each one was spot on.

Downing couldn't even beat the first man, and when he did he hit them into the crowd

Good job he didnt because Carroll would have missed a bucket load

Concur.. he either plays on the left or not at all. On the right he constantly has to come inside and the move breaks down.

I actually thought he was pretty decent today.  I was getting really upset at how he was playing a couple months ago, but the last 2 games I felt he's done relatively well.

Still don't understand how a player that have looked so great for so many years just look so ordinary when he plays for us. Lucky I have Enrique to drool about.

Low on confidence just like the most of our new signings bar Enrique and Henderson(at times).

When has Stewart Downing ever looked great, hes been pretty average for his whole career apart from last year at Villa wear he stepped up. He's a decent/good player but dont ever expect him to tear up any tree's

Never got excited about this transfer. He's lived up to my somewhat mediocre expectations.Just hope he will eventually live up to Kenny's !!

It was to much money for him but I still thought it would be a good transfer. He is the sort of player that always seemed to deliver... not that he was MOTM all the time but he still contributed a whole lot more than he has done for us.

As opposed to the Carroll signing (whom i had no belief in whatsoever so haven't been disappointed), I was happy with the Downing signing.. watched him in an England game in June and he looked very good. I thought he would give us quality down the flanks that we havent had since McManaman. Hes been a huge disappointment, looks devoid of belief. No goals, no assists, from over 20 games played.

Put clear by Henderson tonight he never looked like scoring.. just an aimless shot straight at the keeper, no placement, no composure. I still think (hope) that he will get better. The one thing i wasnt expecting was that he seems to play with his head down.. i thought he had more awareness than he has shown with us.

The strange thing is we have been playing good football this year and in a team which is in a transition you think confidence should not be as low as it appears. He has had plenty of game time, Kenny has shown a lot of faith yet his performances are just not measuring up.
I'm not sure at what point you have to pull him from the first team because he is not really earning his right to be there and i would be much more inclined to keep starting Bellamy and Maxi in front of him.
Both these players have shown more in the way of an end product, yet they seem to spend less time playing.
