Marcotti actually mentioned it first - Balague did have links to Rafa at one point until Rafa broke them off .

We may have asked Valencia how much but we didn't even bid for him and even if we did we couldn't of got him with CL clubs in the running

lets be fair to downing today. he worked really hard all game, beat his man a thousand times, put in some (not all) tasty crosses and had shots on goal. his only shortcoming was the same as the rest of the team  - nothing working out.

exactly. i thought downing did ok today. he was certainly better than most (even though that's not saying a lot).

the bigger problem is our lack of bodies in the box. it's a joke.

Its just that all the efforts he has on goal that are actually on target seem to be straight at the goalie. Could he not hit it to the side or underneath?

You never know how a player would adjust playing for a big team as LFC ,its a different world of expectations and pressure when you wear our Red shirt.

Maybe for future signing it would be advised on conducting Mental tests as well as others.

but it seems 9 out of 10 don't adjust, so where is the real problem?

The problem is that we generally buy overpriced average players, when i see our list of £10mil plus buys i cringe, especially when you compare it to how other clubs spend there money.

Well there is still time for Downing to up his performance in the 2nd half of the season. I don't think he is that BAD as many on here make him to be. He is a good winger but not in the value we paid for. Furthermore, everytime he starts on the left hand side of midfield he does look generally lively and looking to contribute a lot, but when for some reason he gets switched to the right he loses all his natural game and looks pretty average. I hope Kenny just sticks to him on the left he looks better in his natural position.

he just played v blackburn on the right though, and had one of his better games for us.

i think he's playing at his level. he's capable of a few magic moments, which are probably what catch peoples' eye in general - but now we are watching him week in week out we are seeing that the majority of the time he's fairly ordinary. i'm expecting him to grab a couple of goals and a few assists before the season is out but i don't expect a huge improvement in overall performance.

Downing is a classic example how weak mentality and confidence just kills a players potential. From a proffesional perspective he looks deadly ,he has pace ,he had good ball control ,has strangth in his kick ,capable of whipping dangerous passes and yet the end product is soo poor. I mean really i can't detect one weakness in his football skills but i guess great players require some mental abilities which Downing has yet to display.

Quite a pity to be honest.
