Newcastle in for morientez - New thread, didnt know where to put it

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Graeme Souness is looking for defenders because their current back four are horrid. While this is Shearer's last year he won't be looking for Morientes and I don't think Morientes would come to Newcastle in the first place. If Morientes was given the choice to come to Liverpool or Newcastle my money would be on Morientes comming to us.

Why havent newcastle got the money???  They seemed to have plenty of money to bid 25 million for Rooney a couple of months ago, so they could get 2 defenders and still afford morientes.

I still think he will come to us, he has stated that already, but them magpies have cash!! ???

I think its obivious that Morientes will come here, he has said it himself that he wants to play for Liverpool not Newcastle.

This article is from echo:

NEWCASTLE are trying to sabotage Liverpool's bid for Fernando Morientes by making their own move for the striker.

But Anfield boss Rafa Benitez won't get involved in a bidding war and will switch his attention to Nicolas Anelka if the situation drags on.

Morientes met Real President Fiorentino Perez yesterday to plead to be allowed to join Liverpool.

But Perez is adamant the Reds' £3.5m bid isn't acceptable and continues to overprice the 28-year-old.

A showdown meeting involving Morientes, Perez and the player's agent, Gines Carvaja, took place in Madrid.

Morientes was told he can leave the Bernabeu, but only at the right price.

Madrid still haven't officially rejected Liverpool's first bid for the Spaniard and appear to be trying to inflate his value by involving other clubs.

Madrid officials told the player both Newcastle and Monaco are prepared to pay more than the £3.5m on the table.

There is even a suggestion Geordies boss Graeme Souness is ready to bid as much as £10m for the 28-year-old.

Liverpool are sure to increase their offer to £5m if Real indicate they'll allow Morientes to move to Anfield, but won't go beyond this fee.

The £7m price tag orginally placed on Morientes' head is seen as ridiculous given his age and he has only 18 months left on his contract.

Benitez thinks the ball is in the player's court and his next move will be influenced by how much he feels Morientes wants to come to Anfield.

Until last night, all the indications were the striker is desperate to join the Reds, but Liverpool hoped the meeting in Madrid would resolve the situation.

That hasn't happened, and any hint Morientes is willing to discuss a transfer elsewhere will lead to Benitez ending his interest.

Benitez has other options, and an alternative swoop for Anelka shouldn't be ruled out.

Anelka is desperate to return to Anfield and there is an increasing momentum heading in his favour.

The French striker is attractive because he is younger, proven in the Premiership, and isn't cup-tied for the Champions League.

Liverpool would like to take Anelka on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a transfer this summer, but City could accept £6m in January.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are not interested in Laurent Robert, despite a speculative report this morning.

That's what puzzles me. He's impressed by Benitez so naturaly he would come to us but we aren't going to bid more than 5.5 million on Morientes while Newcastle are willing to spend 10 million. But it makes no sense why Newcastle would want another striker. Yes this is Shearer's last year but you also have Bellamy,Kluivert so you would have to bench one of the three and that would only cause further chaos within the club.

As far as I know, Souness has his eyes on defenders because their back four are suffering at a moment.

heres a question
how much does NewCastle have to spend on transfers in Jan.
im not really up on the situation there, but do they need somemore depth at the striker position, and how is their youth program.

With the money from Woodgate they have plenty. They also bid 25 million for Rooney but they were turned down. Souness said he was going to buy three or four players, mostly defenders and a midfielder possibly. Never did he say anything about a striker because scoring goals isn't their problem. They've taken the lead eleven times this season but their defence has caused them to lose that lead and lose the game. That is their problem, defence.

I think something happened last week over Kluiverts transfer that it was not all cracked up to be what it was, that he can leave in the summer im not to sure like, so dont quote me be there is a clause in his contract and that 2 million has to be paid within 2 years or something to that effect. To him personally.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

if they did sign morientes, could that be used as a ploy to lure in potentials to sign at the back or midfield. Which they would boast saying we have an execelant strikeforce?
morientes use for selling the team name in spain?

I doubt it. Newcaste aren't as big as a club as we are and are in danger of  staying at the wrong end of the table. The only reason Morientes wants to leave Madrid is because he can't play otherwise he wouldn't think about leaving.

Kluivert wouldn't had come to Newcastle either had more clubs wanted his signature.

Their main priority is sorting out the back four.
