Eh fck it... ill just copy the thing..

Jovanovic: I turned down Real Madrid and Juventus, now I want to be a Liverpool icon

Milan Jovanovic has insisted he has come to Liverpool to be a leading star, not a back-stage understudy to Fernando Torres.

And for those doubting the ambition of the Serbia international striker, one quick glance of his CV tells you he means business at Anfield.

The man who scored his country's goal at the World Cup to defeat Germany has turned down both Real Madrid and Juventus because he felt he wouldn't get enough games there.

So he will not sit back and settle for a bit-part role in the shadows at his new club, despite the fierce competition he faces to secure a first team place.

Jovanovic, 29, will provide the experienced spearhead to Liverpool's young side against Robotnicki on Thursday evening, as their Europa League campaign gets underway in Macedonia.

And he explained that he hasn't come to England for a free ride and one last pay day, after his free transfer move from Standard Liege. Instead, he wants to become an Anfield icon.

"I turned down Real Madrid 18 months ago, when Predrag Mijatovic was the sporting director. I think 99 per cent of people said they did not understand why I did it," he said.

"If Real call, they say you have to go. But maybe I am special. I thought if I went there it would be as an ordinary player, but if I stayed in Belgium, where I felt good, then I was a star.

"I have no regrets. I turned them down because I didn't want to be on the fringes. I will never go somewhere where I only get to play a small part.

"I want to be happy somewhere, I want to be part of the team, and I am only looking forward to playing with Liverpool."

Jovanovic has all the makings of a cult hero at Anfield. His enthusiasm is infectious, and his never-say-die attitude on the pitch will endear him to Reds fans.

He is equally likeable and energetic off the pitch, and as one of the most experienced members of Liverpool's line up this evening, he is happy to provide the lead as the English club take a leap into the unknown in Skopje.

For the Serb, it is the chance he has waited for, two years after turning down Real and Juventus, and he admits that his friends in the Premier League have given him positive reports about his new club.

"I am 29. When I was 26 two clubs tried to sign me, they were two excellent clubs, and I have had the possibility to go to big clubs, but until now, I stayed at Liege and I never cried," he explained.

"I knew I would join a big club eventually, and I have come to Liverpool to be a part of it. I want to help, and I want to play.

"I spoke to Fellaini, my former Liege team-mate, about life here, he told me training was hard and said that all he does is train, play and sleep. So I am preparing for hard work and a simple life.

"I spoke to Vidic, and he has much respect for Liverpool. He paid Liverpool a big compliment.

"We are friends from the Serbia team. Ok, we fight when we play against each other, we fight on the field but after the game we are big friends.

"I know I have made the right move. It is the right time for me, and I expect to be successful here at Liverpool."

Jovanovic is hoping to start with a goal on his competitive debut for his new club, but if he does, then he plans a different celebration to his winner against Germany in the World Cup.

There, after scoring an historic goal for his country, he ran almost straight into the moat that surrounded the pitch, and he admitted it was a crazy moment.

"The game against Germany was one of the most famous games for our fans, and for our country. I scored and it was a historic goal, because it was our first win over them in 37 years," he said.

"I can't explain the celebration. It was a very special feeling, and maybe I wanted to celebrate with the fans, but I did not manage it! I only saw the hole (around the pitch) very late, too late to change my decision, so all I could do was jump down there.

"I hope I score many goals for Liverpool, but I will not celebrate like that again!"

Too much of this 'persuasion by words' going on, I'd rather like the look of a player or the way the manager's team plays, not how they come across in interview.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

Yeah i'm not disagreeing it's just i've been very impressed with Milan and Joe's passion to get us back to where we belong. Which should hopefully get others around them playing passionately like Stevie and Nando.

That's all we can comment on until the games start coming thick and fast dude. And as of tomorrow the comments about quotes, sound-bites, and how well anyone has handled themselves will be a thing of the past. Especially if we lose the game!

Sounds like he has all the attributes to make it at LFC. Having watched him in the WC he has undoubted ability and I think he will score goals for us. I would like to see him play in a 4-2-3-1 formation with him as one of the 3 playing off of Torres.

Mate you don't know it for a FACT. I'll give you that the balance of probability is that he is, simply because Voronin was garbage and you're probably better than him yourself, but until we see him play for us it remains just extremely likely IMHO.

I actually think Voronin was a far better player than Dossena. Dossena was the modern day Sean Dundee, and made that Nunez bloke look like Pele. He made Marc Gonzalez look like Maradona.
