Liverpool reportedly want Porto coach Jose Mourinho as their new manager and have already sounded out the Portuguese, who also has been linked with Tottenham lately, about joining in the summer.

According to the Sunday Herald, Porto are resigned to losing their manager – and Mourinho has kept them informed about Liverpool’s offer.

Porto believe that there has already been a direct meeting between the parties but think that Mourinho has not yet agreed to move to Anfield until he sees whether Porto can win the Champions League.

But the offer has attracted him, and Porto expect him to sign for the Reds this summer if no other firm offers come in.

One Porto director, who confirmed the contact but wished to remain anonymous, said: "Mourinho has done brilliantly for our club since he joined two years ago so we will not prevent him following his heart and moving to England.

"Our worry is that Mourinho is likely to want to take players like Paolo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho and Benni McCarthy with him which means the break up of what is a great team."

The 40-year-old is Europe’s hottest talent, speaks flawless English and recently endeared himself to Liverpool fans by knocking Manchester United out of the Champions League.

Last season Mourinho won the Portuguese treble of League, Cup and League Cup plus the Uefa Cup final, after being brought in in 2002.

This season Porto are unbeaten in Portugal, in the Cup final again, about to retain the Championship and could be set for the Champions League semi-final after beating Lyon 2-0 in the first leg of the Quarter Final.

Liverpool see him as team-builder and a coach upon whom a dynasty can be rebuilt.

Mourinho has often said that he desires to work for “one of England’s great sides” and is understood to have admitted that re-building Liverpool and returning them to Championship and Champions League winning form would be his dream.

Well let's hope !!

I personally would still go for Martin O'Neill but Mourinho is a bloody good manager. I read a couple of weeks back that if Real Madrid fail to win anything this year then he would be there number 1 choice to take over as coach.

See underneath that though that GH is saying he will still be here next season, hmmmm........

I am a big fan of Mourinhio.

I mean, did anyone see his celebrations in the tunnel after the game at Old Trafford in the CL recently?

The guy has serious passion!

Houllier claims to have the board behind him...and maybe he does.

The worst thing I can imagine is...a joint manager season??

my fingers are crossed. I still think GH can turn things round but he still isn't the best option to make us a dominent force in the premiership for years to come.

If we are going foreign again we may as well go for the best.Capello of Roma said yesterday that he wants to work in england. He has a soft spot for Liverpool and im sure he would enjoy the challenge of turning us around.

capello is good but could proof to be too ex for liverpool. Furthermore his roma is not exactly doing well are they ?

Reckon that Mourinho & MON are the only good manager that liverpool could afford now given their stadium commitment....
