Keepers - Reina extends contract, padelli leaves

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

It's been announced today that Daniele Padelli is returning to Sampdoria.

For me, this almost certainly means that Rafa's got his eye on another keeper. With Dudek all but gone, Carson highly unlikely to return, and none of the other keepers on the books anywhere near first team material, a signing must surely be on the cards.

First and foremost, I'm delighted that Reina has signed again. He is an excellent keeper, and with age on his side he could well be a very, very long term solution for us.

On the flipside, I do feel for Padelli a little. He had a poor game against Charlton on his Prem debut, but reports from his reserve team appearances had been good. I don't know if it was a loan agreement with half an eye on a permanent signing, but whatever the thinking behind bringing him in was, I can't help but wish the kid well.

But where next? Do we go for another up-and-coming European lad, or is a tried-and-tested veteran of the English game the way to go as a back-up?

I'd personally prefer the latter. I'm happy for Rafa to bring in youngsters for the youth and reserve set-ups, but until we have a player that is ready to come in and do the job, I think a Paddy Kenny or John Filan (ie: experienced, but not ridiculous money) would be a shrewd signing.

I'm of the opinion that Carson will stay and fight for his place, but we'd need a third keeper for back up anyway IMO. I'd rather bring in an experienced keeper as you say Ivor th enun, like a Paddy Kenny type of keeper - a steady eddy type of character.

yeah glad reina has been signed up, good move. best of luck to daniel padelli, he was in at the deep end against charlton, felt sorry for the lad, hope he goes on to have a good career for himself. will be interesting to see who rafa brings in as second choice keeper, cant see carson playing second fiddle, a maik taylor type keeper who is reliable when needed maybe....

hmm....scott carson would be terrific back up, can't see him staying though if he doesn't get 1st team football.

Good thread Ivor the Injun.

I too think that people was harsh with a young keeper like Padelli for a game. I've seen lots of excellent keepers having dodgy starts, it's just natural. You can be a good keeper, but if you haven't coordination with the back four, chances are that you're going to pay it.

My speculation is that once Reina has shown he has won the spot under the sticks with no discussion, it's quite obvious Padelli is not going to play much, and I think young keepers must play so he might have chosen to go back to a team where he'll have more chances to play, as the Reserves league, is not quite a challenging thing for a good player.

Your suggestion about an experienced yet not too expensive keeper makes sense. An experienced player won't have the knees weak when Reina injures in a min 65 of a game, and an experienced player that has fought countless battles is always nice to have in the club for the experience he provides to younger team mates.

In Spain there are good keepers, and it's a cheaper market, I'd mention Palop (Spanish), Bravo (Chilean international), Aouate (Israeli international) and Abondanzieri as very interesting players, but may be, bringing an experienced english keeper that assume the role of second keeper is better, because of the reasons I've mentioned and you've mentioned aswell.

At the risk of being accused of defending a Spaniard, I have to praise Reina's game. He said recently that he's annoyed when the press defines him as a 'penalty stopper' as he thinks his game is more than that. I agree, I don't think you've seen many keepers with his ability to create a counter attack with a super long arm distribution. And his ball kick is probably the strongest in the squad.

I think he has made the grade.

P.S. One last note, Dudek is said to be involved in the negotiation talks for Gonzalez, and he might end up in Betis aswell. He'll have the competition of Doblas, a young keeper there, but I think he'd have some chances of being first choice.

glad padelli has gone! but again i"m probably in the minority when i say
i don"t want yo see carson back either!! i don"t rate him, never have &
never will do.
i can"t help it, but ever since his :censored: display against Luton in the
f.a cup i just lost faith in him, as i thought he was at fault
for Every goal they scored especially the penalty- i know every make"s
mistakes but for me it stickes in my mind, even though we won the game!
carson is suited to a team where he get"s first team football
like charlton etc, as he get"s more confident, when playing week after week
and establishes himself as the first choice keeper that will never happen
at LFC so for me,when played as a second or even third choice keeper
he will not have the confidence of himself plus the back 4 in front of him
the reason i say this is cause i always remember mike hooper,he was
a brilliant understudy keeper of his time! whenever he was chosen
i had full confidience he would do well & for those who can remember
him, he always did cause he comanded the box well, unlike carson.
i truly believe raffa will sign another keeper soon & carson will be history
cause like kirkland he never had that cutting edge to make the number
1 spot his own! as to who we sign as a challanger to pepe, make it a
permanent signing & not a loan deal like padelli (remember the last game
of the season!)

I've got to agree with manhatten there, although the veteran doesn't exactly spring to mind you'd have thought someone like Dean Kiley, Roy Carrol or somebody similar could do the job of reserve keeper ably enough.

On the subject of Padelli, I must confess that from the one game he played he did have that "won a chance to play for Liverpool on Jim'll Fix It" look about him. He looked absolutely clueless to be honest, kind of brought back those memories of that old song they used to sing at London derbies "If Lee Dixon can play for England then so can I".
"se e in una bottigla ed e bianco, e latte".

Im glad hes off tbh he could make a decent keeper somwhere but not LFC!

Reina is the dogs nuts...in the semi final all the experts had us beaten when it came to pens..lol! Petr Chec was apparently the best spot kick saver on the planet...erm NO!

I think we should offer Cherlsea £4m for Petr helmet head to be Reinas ballboy!

I would try to keep Carson for this season, with the promise he can go at the end of it if he's not happy. I think he's certainly good enough to be our second choice and maybe in 12 months time a decent older keeper will become available. Jaskeleinen off Bolton would be a decent bet .

Yeah, I like him.

I am going to sign him on ProEvo.

Only 534 credits. I think that's a good deal.
