Rafa's plea to FA over transfer window Nov 2 2004

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today called on the FA to change the rules regarding mid-season transfers when a club is deprived of players due to long-term injury.

In Spain, Liverpool would be allowed into the market to immediately replace broken leg victim Djibril Cisse.

The loophole in La Liga is applied when a player is sidelined with injury for six months or over.

Under English rules Benitez must wait until January to fill the void left by Cisse's horrific injury.

But he confirmed today he already had plans in motion to strengthen his forward line, regardless of the devastating blow to the record signing.

As he prepared to jet out to Spain with the Reds for the Champions League game against Deportivo La Coruna tomorrow, Benitez said: "In Spain, when you have someone who is injured for more than six months, you can sign another player, even though the transfer window is closed.

"Here in England, that's not possible. I think it's a special situation and it would be something for people to consider.

"At this moment, I can't do anything to replace Djibril.

"We can do nothing but watch the transfer market. We were doing this before Djibril was injured and now it's the same.

"We have to see if we can find the right player, and then if we do we will say something."

Fernando Morientes is certainly top of the wanted list, with Benitez having already tried to sign him last summer.

But unless Liverpool can organise a loan deal, it remains unclear where the club would find the funds to finance a January bid.

Rafa's plea to FA over transfer window   Previous 1 2

Benitez joined members of the Reds squad, visiting Cisse in hospital yesterday afternoon and revealed his striker believes he could be back in action inside six months, and is delighted with the player's positive attitude.

He said: "Djibril said to me he is thinking about playing in the last month of the season. That is very positive."

Benitez, however, believes referees in this country could do more to protect players.

He stressed that no blame could be attached to Jay McEveley for the incident in Saturday's game but added: "I think referees should control some situations more.

"In Spain you see different injuries, because here when you cross or shoot, players tackle more. It can be very dangerous."

* XABI ALONSO is a doubt for tomorrow's Champions League clash at Deportivo La Coruna due to a calf problem.

"He will travel but we will have to see how he is," said Rafa Benitez today. "We hope he will be okay."

Oh ffs thats all we need

If I could decide the team I would start with:

Finnan-Carra-Hyypiä-Traore
Garcia-Hamann-Alonso-Riise
----------Kewell----------
----------Baros-----------

But I think that Rafa will select:

Josemi-Carra-Hyypiä-Traore
Finnan-Hamann-Alonso-Riise
----------Garcia----------
----------Baros-----------

I just hope that Josemi  starts performing in his home soil. He has been dreadful in last couple of games. :(

oh my god Xabi Alonso was maybe our only chance of getting something out of this game. i was gonna do a post about it, there's a few reasons why. if he's out i would gladly settle for a score draw. winning it without him will be a miracle.`
more than a miracle that depo got the draw at anfield.

it just gets worse man

Its time for the refs to take some action otherwise we will have no team left :glare:
