Cisse. - Djib-brilliant?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

You have to wonder sometimes what life would have been like if Djibril Cisse hadn't broken his leg in the game against Blackburn last season. Would he be banging in 20 a season? Would he be the new Thierry Henry? Or more realisticly, would he have been a good player?

I remember when it was announced that we were signing him. I saw a strker of lightning speed, burning past defenders and scoring fantastic goals. £14million seemed like a snip in a world where Rio Ferdinand was going for over £30million, but now I don't think i'd pay £5million. It wasn't like Diouf who had one good world cup, Cisse had had a couple of good seasons in La Championat and was in the France squad. He scored on his debut. And then, just as we were comfortable with the idea that Houllier had made one of his rare good signings, he broke his leg. Twice. I said there and then "well thats money well spent" in a sarcastic tone and it now appears that unfortunatly I was right. Nuts.

But when he miraculasly returned he looked sharp again, not quite as fast but still relativley dangerous. The two goals he scored against Villa were surely a sign of great things to come. Nuts. His Champions league final was little more than a cameo and though he played well (and I don't think I'd change anything about that night) it wasn't the Cisse of the previous seasons in France. Guess it goes to show the gulf in difference between the French league and the EPL. Nuts.

This season, he has become little more than a fast pair of legs, groing older and cheaper on the bench. We couldn't believe that he was warming the bench as Crouch continued his drought and Nando looked more and more like a shadow of his former self. Why wan't Cisse plaing? Well, looks like Rafa has got it right again as when Cisse did appear he looked weak, confused and as blunt as an unsharpened pencil. He doesn't seem to care and recently he's appeared to be more concerned with his hair and being Lord of the manor than scoring goals. He wastes oppertunities, shows no commitment and looks out of his depth against premiership opposition.

Today against Man Utd, we saw an apt representation of his season so far. Short though it was, it was no different from any other performance this season. He couldn't win the ball, let alone hold it up in the dying minutes. He looked lost in space which should make a striker of his kind feel overly confident. He didn't know where the goal was, he couldn't turn a tombolla with both hands and what's worse, he doesn't seem to give a fying fluck.

With Rafa saying that if we did well in our games against Arsenal, Man Utd and Benfica we would be splashing the cash in the summer, I can no longer see any future for him at Liverpool without an astounding change of form. I don't like giving up on players, but he's lost and going nowhere at the moment. Could he ever be worth keeping?

Cisse looked poor before he broke his leg and not much has changed now he is back. 14m was clearly too much to pay for an unproven striker, and the French league has only proven again it is not an adequate test of a players ability.

Cisse is a lot like Nando, they were both great in the Spanish and French leagues. I don't think Cisse would be wroth keeping on, even if he does love the club as much as it seems (He got married in Red ffs).

Difference between him playing here and him playing in France was that at France, he was the played that the team was built around. Everything was for him to get the goals, and it worked well. he was the main focal point. Here, at Liverpool, he's not, and instead has to get used to being left out, and used to all the passes heading towards him.

Quality post by the way.

He was lucky the fans didn't loose patientce with him a long time ago. We have to cut our losses(and what losses the will be) at the end of the season and sell him
Steve Gerrard Gerrard,
He'll pass the ball 40 yards,
He's quick and he's f*cking hard,
Steve Gerrard Gerrard.

he's been given the opportunities, he's just not performing. lucky if we get 3mill for him. our expensive foreign strikers allways seem to let us down - owen, fowler, rush?

Good article, not much I can disagree with there. Cisse never really had an impact on me, I can remember before he broke his leg, he played 13 games, just scoring in 3. For a £14million striker that's simply not good enough. And as you've rightly pointed out he looks lost when gets the ball.

He has blistering pace, but when he is presented with the ball and runs at goal he simply doesn't know what to do with it, another worry is that he can't seem to find the net. The levels of accuracy on his shots are terrible.

He was never worth £14million, no matter how much of a hot prospect he was seen by France or by Houllier.

He seems more interested in his off pitch life then on it, I say sell him come the summer and sign someone prolific.

I tend to disagree, He hardly get's a look in regarding chance's! When he does get a run out it's with 10 minute's to go, usually in that time bracket the team is more concentrating on defending rather than attacking, hence it limit's his chances. He get's nowhere near the amount of time as Morientes on the pitch, yet he's a better player, or at least a more usable one. He's also got a better goal scoring record compared to Morientes with less minute's.

In my opinion, if he was givin a run of games he'd gain back some confidence and start doing the business, but this is highly unlikely as it just seem's Rafa doesn't like him. He just need's a fair chance.

KOP-1892,

He hardly gets a chance because of his attitude and the fact he fails to take the oppertunities he's given with both hands. His attitude is appauling. He storms and shouts when he doesn't recieve the ball to his feet, and when he does get ball he doesn't know what to do with it. You can slate Morientes all you like, but Morientes does indeed try and looks like he knows what he's doing.

Cisse does nothing for me that even makes me want to give him a second chance.

Gone in the summer...and I won't be ruing his departure.

The first time I saw Cisse was against Celtic, friendly match at the beggining of the 2004 season. He scored two goals and yet he still didn't convinve me. He seemed like the kind of player that only scored goals against lesser opposition. Before he broke his leg, he dind't seem as he could offer anything to the team. Baros was a much better choice up front and I don't rate Baros at all. I still dont know why Cisse stayed. They must be waiting for him to have a good world cup then sell him at a good price because right now, no team would offer even half what was paid for him.
