BBC are reporting this now, and to be honest once Spurs dropped out it was kind of inevitable Charlton would sneak in. I'd have been stunned had he gone to Everton.

Well, what can I say? I've always liked him as a player, and even when his form was poor I hoped GH stuck with him.

I just hope he gets back to where he was a couple of seasons ago. Not sure how much bearing the move will have on his England prospects, but for £2.5m I think Charlton have got themselves a cracking deal.

All the best, Smurf.

sky sports

Charlton Athletic have completed the £2.5 million capture of midfielder Danny Murphy from Liverpool.

The 28-year-old had been close to joining Tottenham earlier in the week, however the move stalled after failing to receive first-team assurances from new manager Jacques Santini.

With Spurs pulling out of the race for the former Crewe star, who has been capped nine times by his country, The Addicks were free to make a move.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley was clearly able to guarantee Murphy a regular place and has tied him to a four-year deal at The Valley.

More to follow?

From sporting life...

Charlton have signed England midfielder Danny Murphy from Liverpool for £2.5million.

The former Crewe man was set to join Tottenham when a fee was agreed but the deal collapsed when Spurs boss Jacques Santini could not guarantee a regular first-team place.

Addicks boss Alan Curbishley has stepped in to sign the 27-year-old, saying: "Danny is a player we have been tracking for some time, but he only became available last week," said Curbishley.

"We moved in straight away and, although he was publicly linked with other clubs, we were always confident we would sign Danny," Curbishley told the club website.

"The fact he has chosen to come here over a number of other Premiership clubs is an endorsement of what we are trying to achieve at Charlton.

"I also believe the fact that Charlton have signed an England international from one of this country's biggest clubs shows our tactics in the transfer market are paying off.

"We have remained patient and stayed focused on bringing in the type and quality of player we have always felt we needed."

Heh heh - Charlton's website has crashed, so I guess this is some of the biggest news they've had to report for a while.
