If he's a real proven quality players, 12M shouldn't be too much for a club like Liverpool. I think we just have a mixed feeling with the concern of internal current finance situation.

Rafael Benitez is hoping to fund a £10million raid for Real Sociedad playmaker Xabi Alonso after sanctioning the shock sale of Danny Murphy. Liverpool on Sunday agreed a £2.5million fee with Tottenham for the 27-year-old England international after telling Benitez he had to raise funds before he could spend again. And the new manager has moved swiftly to land his top target Alonso, devastating Murphy with the news he was no longer wanted on Friday and meeting officials from the Spanish club at Goodison Park on Saturday. Benitez watched the central midfielder produce a stylish first-half display in Sociedad's 2-2 draw with Everton and hopes to make the Spanish international his showpiece summer signing before the end of the week. Liverpool had lined up the 22-year-old as Steven Gerrard's replacement when the Anfield skipper seemed set to depart for Chelsea. But now Benitez has made several midfield sacrifices to raise the funds for them to play alongside each other and hopes Sociedad will relent on a £12million asking price for their prized asset.

£ 12 million is a lot of money. Maybe Benitez can use the proceeds from the sale of Murphy and pay the rest over annual/monthly anstallments? If Liverpool qualify for CL there will be more money available. Maybe Benitez expect to raise more money from selling Finnan, Diao, Kirkland, Baros or someone else?

Xabi Alonso would be a class addition to our team even at 12m- he would be worth every penny. I went to watch Sociedad against Everton on saturday and Alonso looked in a class of his own, i can't remember the last time i saw a player with such vision and passing accuracy. I feel him and Gerrard in would have the potential to be the best midfield partnership in Europe.

I'd love to see Xabi Alonso in a red shirt, he looks a real class act. :) with Murphy likely to join spurs and vladi out for 6 months , fresh face's in midfield seem very likely, and Alonso should be high on the list , although 12 Mill seems steep, i'm sure he'll repay the fee.

That's a lot of tackling for Stevie to do, but we'd scare most people to death with that line up as there's l bit of everything there. Pace (philips) Power (Stevie G) with plenty of tricks and guile from Harry and Alonso, It gets my vote Titi. :p

wrong.

he's a box to box midfielder with great vision and passing ability. very similar to gerrard. the two would compliment each other perfectly as they could take turns bombing forward whilst the other covers.
