A bad start to the season - So how do we fix it?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

This is by no means a 'doom and gloom' post before i start, simply a honest take from a dissapointed passionate fan.
As we all know the start to our domestic season has been a bit below our expectations and desire!
Here are our first 6 results

Sheffield UTD 1 Liverpool 1

Liverpool 2 W Ham 1

Everton 3 Liverpool 0

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0

Liverpool 2 Newcastle 0

Liverpool 3 Spurs 0

Bolton 2 Liverpool 0

Thats 10 points from a possible 21 and only 1 point taken away from home.
Where are we going wrong and how do we fix it?

Firstly i think Raffa needs to decide exactly what he wants from our captain. There is a problem in midfield in that we have 2 quality c/m in Sissoko and Alonso. Our manager obviously wants to play them both but at what cost?We have players for the right(where Gerrard played last season) !Pennant seems to be given the nod there. So Gerrard is put on the left flank at times and basically i feel this has a huge impact on his game.Hes a naturally right footed player hence he needs to gain an extra yard to beat a man to get the ball on to his best foot at times..hes loosing to many balls.
Is Gerrard happy?
Is Raffa asking too much, even from one of the best in world football?

In saying that if Raffa wants to accomodate both Sissoko and Alonso in their natural positions(maybe the only positions) they can play...is it time to try another formation and stick with it for a while?
Maybe a 4-5-1 something like this.

                                Reina

        Finnan    Agger          Carragher    Riise

      Pennant  Alonso             Sissoko    Gonzalez
                           Gerrard

                           Kuyt

To me it would make sense, yes there are quality players on the bench but its up to them to impress in training and the reserves and to fight fot their right to wear a first team shirt.
Which brings me to my next point!

Does a system of rotation give players a license to slack perhaps?Form does not seem to matter, players are picked to suit their opponents.

To me Raffa seems to have equal faith in nearly all of his squad(not a bad thing). He seems to measure up our opposition with precision and almost hand pick every player to counter their opponent on the pitch.Or to say it easier,he changes our style to suit who we play!To me this is wrong.LFC should play like LFC every time and let our opponents worry about matching and beating us.I just feel that Raffa shows other managers and teams too much respect at times and that we are good enough to play our own game our way....give the opposition a problem in beating us.
Bellamy was picked today ahead of Crouch as Benitez felt his pace would cause Bolton(not the fastest team) problems! This was a bad decision.
Crouch is in form and on fire,Bellamy is the opposite. What do players need to do to get on the team?

Just a simple question:

Do you think Reina is a better, more reliable goalkeeper than Dudek?

I really dont feel there is a lot wrong and its natural that after signing a few quality players that we are gonna take a while to gel.But the bottom line is that the more Raffa tinkers the longer it will take!

Players should be rewarded for consistant quality performances by a consistant run of games.I really feel for Peter Crouch after all his hard work and performances. He must be feeling deflated and thinking what more he actually has to do to get on the team if we stick with 4-4-2

So basically Raffa needs to wake up a bit and see that all this rotation and changing is not working, its confusing the players and the fans and its not getting results.
Lets hope Raffa is man enough and honest enough with himself to admit that he has made a mistake.

Its time to pick the best formation and best 11 and be LFC home and away.Get a bit of passion and play our game how we want to play.We are capable of getting results if we want them enough.
WE DONT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT WHO WE ARE PLAYING..THEY SHOULD BE WORRYING ABOUT HOW WE ARE GONNA PLAY.

We are LFC after all :buttrock

I agree Barry, totally. I'm sick as the proverbial.. And I'm sick of the "In Rafa, we trust!" bullsh1t! And I'm sick of "he won us the European Cup" brigade! I'll put my hand out to be slapped. I am not blind to Reina's shortcomings and if i hear again hes' one of the world's best, i'll scream! Give Dudek another chance! Alonso's form is worrying.. Gerrard is the best in the world, 100% certain, but as an attacking central midfielder! Sissoko, I like but his "win everyball" style, though heart pleasing, means he's gonna pick up a bag of cards and miss a lot of matches! Also, we need a goal poacher, a Fowler/Owen hybrid. Kuyt looks promising, but only time will tell! Challenge for the title this year? Don't make me laugh!!
I'm probably going over board a bit but I am so p1ssed off after today! I was sure the hammering we got from Everton would be a turning point, but, alas it wasn't!!

I understand your pain. HOwever, personal insults are out of order. It's good that you're thinking about our problems. On the other hand, your analysis is by no means original and you might have saved a lot of space.

Things are all messed up on a decision like that with raina we need to activate the 4th official with out a doubt.
That 1st goal made all the difference to the game.
the mid field are running about like chickens with there heads cut off our midfield don’t know where the strikers are Gerrard is getting more and more thrustrated Alonso looked shabby today and bellamy did nothing and kuyt was taken off and bellamy left on the pitch ? What the hell is going on?

We are bumping into each other two players going for the same ball.
The constant rotating is killing us ok he has tried it now its not working why put all your faith in a kuyt bellamy striking force if there not knitting at all and one of them is not performing we cant get any luck at all at the moment.
I think its time for a total rethink from the defence to the strikers
All this is costing us dearly in the premiership I still don’t think we are out of it
But I’m starting to get concerned that all this will flow over to our champions league hopes.
Sl@g me off at will but it's the way I see it

The idea with playing Gerrard on the left is that he can cut inside and shoot on his favoured foot.

It's a simple premise, which would work wonders if Stevie stopped being a Primadonna for a moment.

Sulking gets you nowhere, and it's f*cking OBVIOUS that he's having a strop about the whole issue.

He relishes the floating role, so what difference does it make where he appears on the team sheet, when he hardly ever stays on the left anyway?

Time for our captain to swallow his pride and accept that he's no bigger than anyone else in the team to Rafa.

Most of you think he is, which is fair enough.

But Rafa picks the team, and Stevie needs to accept that and stop going through the motions. (If he carries on sulking, he'll get booted from the side, and that will be that. No ifs, no buts, no anything. Make no mistake - Rafa is incharge, and if he says "sell Gerrard", the lad will be gone quicker than a woodworms orgasm.)

I've watched every game that we get in Australia for Liverpool, and  i believe that our defence is a huge problem. We take to long to clear the ball from the back. Carra is trying to be to smart sometimes and costs us, Agger has improved heaps, and i believe should be starting in most games if not every. Riise is donig a great job at the back, as well running up on the wing (and centre getting a great goal vs Spurs  :) )

Kuyt should be our main striker, with either Crouchy or Bellamy for support.

Gerrard i think should play a role more like Kaka for AC milan, come in from behind the strikers to unleash a power drive.

I think the main problem lies with:

Gerrard - Alonso - Sissoko

2 positions, 3 players.

The sooner we solve this problem, the sooner we can get on with business. Rotate them, play them all at once, but ffs Rafa DON"T play Gerrard, right, then left, than back, then front or sidewards, its just NOT WORKING! :veryangry

Bellamy has lost the plot I can't see him scoring in any of the next few games. Time for either Fowler to step up once more, or try the unusual and unused Kuyt - Crouchy partnership.
"LIVERPOOL: 6 European Cups, 20 Domestic Titles, 3 UEFA Cups, 8 FA Cups, 10 League Cups and 4 European Super Cups and 1 Club World Championship

All other English clubs pale into insignificance!"
