Thailand calls state of emergency

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok amid rumours of a state coup.

"I declare Bangkok under a severe state of emergency," he said on television.

The measure came after tanks reportedly took up position around the Thai government headquarters in Bangkok blocking traffic.

An army-owned TV station has altered its programming to broadcast images of the royal family and songs associated in the past with military coups.

thats me not going out then

seriously all the local tv channels are just playing music and showing old images

yeah they want thaksin out mate, hopefully there will be no bloodshed. the election is due next month i think but they will try and force him out. two weeks ago a car was stopped near his house full of explosives, the driver was a soldier who worked for the head of internal security, he was promptly fired.

ok it would appear the soldiers involved are thaksin supporters pre empting a coup from soldiers against him, so they are protecting him it would appear. although at the moment thaksin is in new york

its all very confusing, just watching bbc world news now, they are conlicting themselves so its all still very sketchy. it appears the army at government house have ordered the police to put down their weapons.

Peewee it seems pretty unstable out there, what with the army taking different sides, what's it all over. Corruption i suppose ?

the people alliance for democracy want thaksin out, the army out here are powerful as are the police. the army is split between supporting him and against him. thaksin has ordered the army to not act illegally but they have put the tv and radio stations of air. they managed to get one channel working again and brodcast thaksin claiming a state of emergency.

basically since his family sold his company shin corp some people have complained that he didnt pay any taxes, but the law said he dint have to pay any taxes.

as a pm he is atually well thought of by most people because he gets things done
