My internet connection crashed last Sunday morning when I was browsing this site and although I was back up and running within minutes, I couldn't connect to this site. For a day or two I thought Rundle had decided to f.uck it all for a game of soldiers after the barnie last week.

For tech heads out there, has anybody else experienced what happened with my internet connection?

The website crashed last Sunday morning while I was writing a PM. When I tried to reload I got the ol' "this website is not available/operation timed out" Firefox message. First of all I assumed that it was another site down time, as there was one the previous Thursday.

I tried logging on later that day and then the following day, but to no avail. I tried using my missus' laptop and we could log on with that either.

At this stage I thought that Rundle had either given me a blanket IP address ban    or was so p.issed off with the peewee episode that he was pulling the site down for a few days to allow everybody to cool off. 

However, I then noticed that I couldn't access football365.com either and I knew then that there had to be a problem at my end as there was no way a large commercial site like 365 would be down for more than a couple of hours. I had a look at Google's cache and could see that there was indeed postings on the site during the week so I knew that the site wasn't down.

After some extensive research about IP addresses which made my head ache I sorted the problem by simply unplugging my router for about 30 minutes and all then was honkey dorey. This, I think, caused my ISP's server to flush my IP address and give me another one, thus solving the problem.

Anyway, the lesson to be learned here for the moderators and admin is that IP addresses are not a conclusive way of identifying WUM (as I discovered to my horror a year or so ago in relation to a totally innocent member here who had the same IP address as a notorious WUM) and banning members by banning their IP address is meaningless if people read between the lines of this post.

Yes, it kept half the forum of Real Sociedad from logging on a couple of months back after a site crash.

It was weird, some of us could enter, some could not, and some could enter in firefox while they couldn't do so in Explorer and viceversa. All was solved by cleaning the temporary files of the browser, but I cannot give you further details of the problem because I didn't bother to check why happened.

Sometimes some ISP have problems with DNS, but then you wouldn't be receiving operation time out messages. My 5 cents was that the temporary files were messing your firefox. Have another browser installed (opera, maxthon) to check it out next time!

But I hadn't read this bit. When I had that trouble it was with one site only. What you describe here can happen. Turn it off and on again first, ask later, is the basic rule here (Also if you use RJ45 cables instead of USB to connect to the router, it can be the cable)

The problem was with both Internet Explorer and Firefox and I have never experienced it before. I now know the solution, but still don't understand what caused the problem.

As an aside, my router is unprotected/unsecured and I have a number of cyber squatters on it. The reason why it is unsecured is because when I set up the security settings it works fine on my PC but causes my lady's laptop to crash when accessing the internet.

Anyway, there are a few eastern Europeans living in the houses beside me and I can clearly see them connecting to my internet connection: when I access my router I can see a few computers called "LukasPC", "Jerzy" etc logging in to my broadband connection.

Strangely they haven't ruin riot and are not nicking too much of my monthly download quota by downloading movies etc. However, that is besides the point: what they are doing is illegal, its theft and I am exposing my own home network to prying eyes.

Does anybody know why a secured network might cause my girlfriend's laptop to crash? It crashes as it logs in to the secured network so I am thinking it may have something to do with the encryption key.

Is there also a way where I can ping a message across the LAN to the other computers telling them to f.uck off or I'll call the police? I remember years ago in college it was possible to send a message through the network which flashed up on the screen of another computer.

why not try setting your firewall to a higher level of security?

What I'm trying to do is to only allow the MAC addresses of my computer, my missus' laptop and my Xbox access to the network on my router's client list.

It may not be encryted but it may keep the Poles and Slovaks from downloading porn on my broadban account.
