Are the group stages usually this bad? I remember some great games with both teams going for it in Japan and Korea and Germany. They seemed to have a ball was that was designed to stay low with loads of long-range pile drivers. Dont know if it's the altitude or the ball but it's been rubbish so far.

You're not wrong, mate.  I didn't look back to Korea/Japan but THIS PAGE FROM WIKIPEDIA clearly shows that there was goals galore in the group stages in Germany.  Indeed, I remember well the opening game of the tournament: a 4-2 cracker with Germany running wild against Costa Rica.  Hopefully this one takes a turn toward the interesting soon.

This could be a bigger story then the horns :)

36 beautiful blonde Dutch fans were kicked out and then arrested during the Holland – Denmark World Cup for wearing bright orange dresses.

The dresses were sold with Bavaria Beer packs in the Netherlands in the run-up to the World Cup, but football governing body FIFA accused the young women of staging an ambush marketing campaign
“We were sitting near the front, making a lot of noise, and the cameras kept focusing on us,” Barbara Kastein told a local paper.

“In the second half, about 40 stewards surrounded us and forced us to leave the stadium,” she said.

They were taken to a FIFA office where police quizzed them about the dresses and asked if they worked for Bavaria. More than three hours later, they were released and police said they would continue investigating, the paper said.

FIFA said the women were “used by a large Dutch brewery as an instrument for an ambush marketing campaign”, although the dresses had no branding on them.

Budweiser, an official sponsor, is the only beer company allowed to advertise within the stadiums. FIFA fiercely protects its marketing interests, which are a major cash spinner for the organisation.

I think its got to be, at firsts i was sure too much was beeing made of it but so many passes are being over cooked and shots going over, i mean they are not just going over by a bit but miles over, it seem as soon as to hit it the ball starts to lift.
The German have used the ball for the last 6 months and it seems strange that they are the only team that have looked good so far....well aprt from NZ lol

.. and Argentina   :D

yep I have to say, those free kicks and shots, by the decent players are going well over the cross bar.

What a shame the ball, the 'bugle' and the striking stewards seem to be hogging the headlines, not the football..

The action will pick up...it simply has to.  The players will settle in, adapt to the ball and the atmosphere and get on with it.    The cream always rises to the top.  I just hope it happens soon.  We'll see what Brazil and Spain can bring to the table.

I think Spain more than Brazil will get the better start, but Brazil will still  look a class above tonight.

Holy s'hit. There's more to these fit Dutch girls thing than we thought:

Robbie Earle Robbie Earle played for Jamaica in the 1998 World Cup

ITV World Cup pundit Robbie Earle has been sacked by the broadcaster after tickets for his family and friends were passed on to a third party.

ITV said a "substantial number" of tickets for the Denmark v Holland match on Monday had been passed on, breaching Fifa rules.

It has been claimed a block of tickets were used by a Dutch company for an "ambush marketing effort".

A spokesperson for Earle said a statement would be released shortly.

"Following claims by FIFA that official 2010 World Cup tickets may have been used for ambush marketing, ITV has reviewed its entire ticket allocation for the tournament," the TV network said in a statement.

"Immediate investigations indicated that a block of ITV tickets would appear to have been used for unauthorised purposes during the Holland v Denmark match.

"Further enquiries have revealed that a substantial number of tickets allocated to Robbie Earle for family and friends have been passed to a third party in breach of FIFA rules.

"As a result, Robbie Earle's contract with ITV has been terminated with immediate effect."

The announcement comes after officials ejected 36 women who were wearing orange mini-dresses during Holland's game against Denmark.

The women were accused of "ambush marketing" for a brand of beer.

Members of the group, accused of promoting a brand that is not one of the tournament's official sponsors, were found with tickets understood to have been part of Earle's allocation.

The tickets' terms and conditions stipulate they must not be passed on or sold to anyone else.

Earle, 45, an ambassador for England's 2018 World Cup bid, played for Wimbledon and Port Vale as well as for Jamaica in the 1998 World Cup.
