Great, two whole days without footy now! Damn these tournaments: they get you hooked on watching football every day and leave you hanging just when things are getting interesting. :D

Most people have commented on the fact that Senna had a very good game after i said that Aragones should of played Xabi.

The reason i still think Xabi should of played is because he would of had so much of the ball and Italy were happy to let Spain have it in deeper areas without really pressing them, Alonso would imo of got attacks going quicker and got Torres more involved with early diagonal balls.
He varies his passing alot better and would of given the italians something to worry about.
Just my opinion, Senna played well and did what was asked of him, but i think Aragones should of been abit more bold knowing Italy would sit so deep with so many players behind the ball.

Manhatten has picked up on the point i was going to say about Motson...the senile arl tw@t!

Credit to Spain though, they had two banks of busses to get through in order to try and feed the strikers. A very tough task given the Italians knack of stifling a game. You have to acknowledge the fact that they are masters of their art....albeit a dour canvas upon which they paint their intent. So it was bound to go all the way.

Senna, Puyol, Silva and Ramos were exceptional - in the end so was Casillas.

Well done Spain. 22nd June will be banished now (largely) - and on will come Russia, who have a score to settle.......and I bet they at least attempt to resolve it with expansive football. But, you just never know....  :)

My two choices (Holland and Italy) have both bitten the dust, so I am down to just Russia, and if they lose I will be supporting Spain......anyone but the bloody Germans! :D

I thought so, too, Ace--especially as the 2nd half wore on.  Iniesta was having a poor game so I thought the Fabregas switch made sense.  But why Aragones insists on bringing Cazorla on in these matches is beyond me.  I suppose he is meant to provide some width but he's done the square root of feck all so far for Spain.  The Italians were sitting deep, with two banks of four and Spain were dying for someone to provide the incisive passing to carve them open.  A few times Torres got the better of Panucci down the left and I think, as you say, an early ball or two from Alonso down that channel would have worked a treat.

I must admit, I wanted the Germans to dump the Portuguese out in the QFs.  I was all set to cheer for the Portuguese but the constant attention lavished on Ronaldo was stomach churning.  Visions of him crying at the end of the match kept drifting into my mind and, when Schweinsteiger scored, I was out of my seat fist pumping! :D  Now that that's happened, though, I won't be disappointed if Turkey pull off the impossible (again).  I somehow can't see it happening, though.

Just like it must be admitted Senna did a good game and played above his standards at Villarreal in a sound game, do not think Iniesta is the poor player that has reached the end of the season apparently with nothing left to give. Iniesta is indeed a good player, but he hasn't performed well.

As for the spelling.

Cazorla -- Ka-thor-la'
Guiza-  Gui - tha

the gui is pronounced like you say Luis , and the za as you say thanks.

Sounds like the English announcers I've been hearing have got the names about right, then. :nod

I can't remember who was commentating on the Dutch-Russian game the other night but, unlike his compatriots, finally got the Russian keeper's name right.  It's pronounced A-ken-fay-ev not A-ken-feev! :D

On Iniesta, Sabre, is he suffering a bit from having to nominally start from a wide position in the Spanish set up?  My sense is that he likes to take up more central positions with Barca?  Perhaps, like Torres, Aragones is not getting the most out of someone who is normally a cracking little player? ???

I think that Liverpool fans should be happy if Spain get knocked out.  At least then we'll know if we'll be getting Villa or Silva and if Alonso is  leaving.
