We can probably manage the group quite well without him, but he will be a prize asset in the knock-out rounds. If he can get half an hour opn the pitch in last group game, he'll be fine. Nowt 100%, but good enough.

He'll probably be out for all the first 3 games, so were probably looking at the knockout stages before he can play. We should be able to put a team together to win the first 3 games ffs ,so hopefully he will get 8wks to get himself right . So in a word yes ,we should take him.

We took beckham in similar circumstances in world cup 2002, so why not.

Cant deny he is a great player and we would miss him, still hate the :censored: tho.

On sky earlier they said sven was taking him even if only for the knockout stages so it looks like he IS goin'. I'd probably take him myself as there isn't anyone else with the quality of a 60-70% fit Rooney in the country and what alternatives are there?: Emile Heskey ???

Bold statement there HK!

Me for one would take him as I believe the group is there to be won and Rooney will be more than fit for the later stages.

I've heard a lot of comments about how we can't win it this year....BUT..... it seems to me, seeing a few comments from a few of the English players, that there is a real hunger that i've not seen in quite a few years.

I'll certainly go out on a limb and say we can win it. This may well be our year where we arn't found wanting.  :buttrock

My inital thoughts were that if there is a possibility he could play in the knockout stages we should definitely take him.  If we can't get to the second round without him, then we don't deserve to win the World Cup, and once it gets down to the knockout stages, his skill is likely to make the difference whether or not we beat teams like Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Spain etc.

But I can't think of any top players who have been taken to the World Cup where the coach has gambled on them being fit enough to play in the latter stages, where they have actually made any difference to the team.  Anybody have any examples where this gamble has actually paid off?

Him and Owen should be great even if they're both not quite 100%.
