Liverpool are lining up a £12m bid to beat Barcelona to Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo.

The Argentine defender has impressed at the World Cup, attracting interest from the Spanish giants.

But Liverpool have been tracking the 24-year-old for some time and reports in Portugal suggest they are ready to step up their interest to ensure he comes to England.

The Reds have intensified their efforts after learning that they could miss out on Sevilla's Alberto Moreno.

Rojo - who can also play as a centre-back - has been used by his country as a left-back in Brazil with impressive results.

Liverpool's interest in Rojo hasn't stopped them looking elsewhere for Moreno alternatives however, with Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand also in their sights.

Rojo has previously admitted he would like to join international teammate Lionel Messi, saying: "Of course I'd like to play [with Messi], but to tell the truth, I haven't spoken to Leo about it.

"I just know that I've performed well in the last year. We will see what happens after the World Cup."

It now remains to be seen whether Liverpool's bid is enough to persuade Rojo to turn his back on Barca's interest and make the move to Anfield instead.

Liverpool are preparing to switch their focus to Benfica attacking midfielder Lazar Markovic in the event they cannot snap up Adam Lallana from Southampton.

The Saints have so far resisted cashing in on Lallana, who has been the subject of a £25m bid from the Premier League runners-up, and earlier this week the club's executive director suggested the England international should stay put.

Liverpool are not sitting idly by and hoping the tide turns on their Lallana admiration however and, according to Portuguese daily A Bola, Markovic is on their list.

The Serbian, who enjoyed a fine campaign with Jorge Jesus' Benfica side last season, has attracted Liverpool's attention and fits the bill as a Lallana alternative.

Benfica are unlikely to be keen to lose Markovic after just a single season though, while Chelsea are also thought to have a favourable agreement with regard to the player.

Markovic made 26 appearances for Benfica in the Primeira Liga last term as the club took home the title.

He also featured eight times in Benfica's run to the final of the Europa League.

il be sick if we end up forking out 30 odd mil on lallana   a price tag like that will heap on the pressure to perform instantly and i doubt he will. that kind of money should be getting us a match winner and not a utility player.

I'll be gutted myself mate, the article in the echo yesterday implied that Lallana is still our number 1 target, the player is desperate to join us and he'll convince Southampton to accept our offer when he returns from the World Cup.
Lallana can't even oust Danny Welbeck out of the England starting XI and we are going to spend Marquee type money on him.

I'll say we should table a FINAL £20M offer expiring in 10 days for him (£45M including Lovren) and no more. I'm sure Soton are playing hard ball and I don't blame them...but no way they'll be able to auction off Lallana for anything more than £20M (but well...there's always a Spurs and their silly money LOL)

I think Rodgers is keen on the idea of an English Liverpool. Like Barce were Spanish, and most of the credit of Spain's recent success is given to Barca and their players. Just my thoughts though.

Has Shaqiri managed to complete a single clean pass today?

So poor it's incredible!

I'd honestly rather see Ilorri given a go than waste more money on someone like Lovren. He looks competent but no better than what's already on our books (Skrtel, Sakho or Agger)
I see Bertrands name is being mentioned again as well, looks like Seville are asking too much for Moreno.
Underwhelmed a bit with this transfer committee of ours I have to say.

Yes, I agree, Moreno just doesn't look impressive at all to me and 17 million pounds for him is a huge travesty. I think we should stay away.

Moreno is one of the best young left fullbacks out there, on the same level as Luke Shaw, maybe even better. If we miss out on him, I wouldn't mind Ricardo Rodriguez from Wolfsburg, Switzerland international.

You're advocating us signing more players who aren't as good as what we currently have in the position... ???

Do you seriously not realise how important it is to improve the first team? I dont understand how you think we can move forward without doing this....
