I know what he is on - that's a main reason for them wanting him gone.

Last season Downing was put on the sidelines whilst the new signings were to play - it took until Jan for him to be reinstated because the unproven players that arrived ( despite showing an eye for goal and working hard in pre season ) didnt do it when it mattered - in the Prem. Enrique was left exposed because in front of him he had no one doing the hard work getting back - Downing did that. He will get zero credit for it but Downing coming back into the team in Jan was another reason why our results and play improved - it wasnt just about getting the goals and assists.

If Costa does arrive then yes possibly let Downing go ( again though Costa isn't a natural wide player ) - same with Aspas and just like Borini the season before - they aren't natural wide players who link with the fullback and support them. Bring in a natural wide player then let Downing go. Let him go without a replacement - it's the same mistakes as last summer all over again.

you love Downing don't you? He's your favourite player. which is nice, not being funny at all but Downing needs people to have a vote for him, especially at Anfield when there's 42000 people groaning at him but as long as he has you cheer him when he fluffs yet another cross he'll keep smiling.

bless ya

Whats happened to the Costa deal then? His club say no, he says no so is that our interest over then? it's all gone a bit quiet

Benny - you keep inferring that Downing is a 'proven' player. What do you mean by that? By my and many peoples reckoning he has proven that he isn't good enough to play for a club like ours and doesn't fit in with Rodgers style of play. If the best example you can provide is that he provides good defensive cover then that isn't much of an argument.

I'm inferring that Downing needs to be replaced by a proven player before we let him go. Despite some claims Downing is an experienced international prem player who did a job well for us last season.

I'd rather he go and we help the wage bill. We can be paying a young up and coming player less and improve the squad.

Toby Alderweireld has been backed in from 20/1 to 2/1 to join Everton amid reports the Toffees are planning a swoop for the long-term Liverpool target. Roberto Martinez's men are now favourites to secure his signature this summer, with the Reds out to 4/1. See all our transfer odds here.

We need a top CB not another overpriced forward or attacking midfielder with 'potential'.

So despite Carra's lack of pace and frequent gaffs he should still be in the side, even after having retired, wow, just wow!!!

Yes because even then he is still a better CB than Toure.

Liverpool have agreed terms with Valencia's Aly Cissokho over a one year loan deal with the option of a permanent transfer.

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool stepped up their interest in the French international after a deal for Benfica's Lorenzo Melgarejo fell through, quashing Sunderland's hopes of luring Cissoko to the Stadium of Light.

It is thought that Liverpool will pay Valencia €1m (£870,000) for the initial loan period with an option to sign the player permanently at the end of the season for €4m (£3.5m).

Cissokho will now compete with Jose Enrique for the starting left-back spot in Brendan Rodgers' team.

The signing brings the end to a summer-long search for reinforcements down the left for Liverpool with Brendan Rodgers on the record as acknowledging the position is an area that needed strengthening.

Late last month Rodgers said: "There are obviously certain areas of the squad where we're a bit thinner than others.

"We probably need a bit more support - that extra bit of quality - at the top end of the field and that's something we'll look out for.

"That'll be mixed with needing cover in the left-back position - that's something we're looking at. It's not really about numbers, it's about quality.

"If we can do that over the next number of weeks we'll be happy."

Liverpool thought they had addressed the problem after reaching an agreement with Benfica over Lorenzo Melgarejo, only for the deal for the one-cap Paraguayan to collapse over an inability to secure a work permit.

On a different note, how serious is the Diego Costa link to the club ? I don't think he's worth half the reported 21mill we seem to be offering. Not even sure where he'd fit in the side with OR WITHOUT Suarez. As far as I'm concerned, he's no more than another squad player who -much like Carroll, Downing, Henderson, Allen and Borini- we'll look back and think we overspent on. Don't understand why we are looking for a backup forward anyways, I thought Borini and Aspas, not to mention -an out of position- Suarez provided that. . We need a quality wide player (in terms of attacking positions) and more importantly a quality CB. If we have money to spend, let's focus on that instead of adding to a position where we already have 4 senior players competing for 1 spot.

How serious is/was the club with respect to getting this player? only reason I ask is that I haven't really heard (or seen) much in the way of any attempts to buy him.

Not sure about Toby Alderweireld. I know a few Ajax season ticket holders and they don't rate him much and think he would struggle over here
