unless you want to elaborate on why you think it is a mistake?

Because its an area we struggled with that season - have a physical destroyer in the middle who could stand up against some big players that teams have - unless we find a way to combat that then the areas of weakness we had last season will still be there for this season.

I don't think Rodgers really wants an out and out destroyer type Midfielder.

The days of having an out and out midfield destroyer are slowly coming to an end. Game is evolving where the better teams want central midfielders to be all rounders and have more strings to their bows

Are they really coming to an end ? Busquets is one of the most important players in both the Barce and Spanish teams - Yaya Toure has the physical presence also. The top teams have a player who has a physical side to his game where his power helps dominate the middle of the park. We don't have anyone on any part of the pitch who can physically dominate - its why we got bullied a number of times last season.

agree and disagree. Personally, I would love us to sign a masherano or similar. IMO I also think we need one.

However, not all top sides have a "destroyer" - Utd won the league without one.

Lucas was out for 2 months and didn't look quite right when he came back, and only completed 16 games all season. With a good bit of rest and a full pre-season, if he is back to his best, then he is our first choice in that position - and so should be when on form.

It's all about the ifs, buts and maybes.  IF he is back to his best. IF he remains injury free IF..... etc etc

Bringing someone else in cuts down the risk, yes, but I guess the manager thinks an on form Lucas is good enough for a top four starting 11, and would rather portion his funds elsewhere for the moment.

My 2pence worth would be to bring someone in, but if we can't afford/attract a Yaya Toure / Masherano, then look at someone like West Ham's Mohamed Diame

Toure is no way just a defensive midfielder. For me his an all rounder. Busquets is more of one but even he has more to his game than just winning he ball and giving it to a team mate

But what they both have in common that we don't have in our team is a physical presence on the pitch - the power , the ability to not get bullied. The player doesn't have to only have one string to his bow - but we need someone or possibly two players with some power and physical strength in their game - until then we will get bullied by teams

That's bit of a different argument to be honest bud. I.e i'm the better teams are shifting from the traditional win the ball and give it to a team mate kind of destroyer while your referring more about physical attributes, not getting bullied off the ball. i actually agree with you on that point.

And the last point is what happened a number of times last season - we got bullied by a number of teams and lost. We are a small technical team - its not enough without some sort of steel in the team

While i actually agree about getting a different style midfielder in I dont believe we actually got bullied last season at all.
More overran at times.
The only game (from my recollection) we were bullied out of it somewhat was Stoke away and that was more the defenders than the midfield.

It was alarming at times how easy our midfield was bypassed by runners though.
Villa at home and Southampton away we were totally caught out by movement and a little bit of directness and pace.
I'd have also had Diame, i know he is supposed to have some sort of possible health issue that might make passing a medical difficult but he was head and shoulders above our midfield home and away last season.

Diame is the perfect example of someone bullying us - he did exactly that - we couldn't cope with his power and physical attributes - same when we played against Dembele

Diame has got a suspect heart - it stopped the Mancs buying him. Good player - not sure if worth the risk . The perfect player was Wanyama.
