It is no secret that Brendan Rodgers likes young hard working players. The manager has made it one of Liverpool’s missions to bring great young talent in hopes to creating a squad for the future over the next few seasons.

He already has made strong additions with the signings of Fabio Borini and Oussma Assaidi, but the addition of 25-year-old Belgian international Dries Mertens could not only add great versatility to the wings and midfield but also goals.

Mertens scored 20 goals last season for PSV and has already scored four in five games this season in the Dutch Eredivisie so far. According to TalkSport, Mertens could be available for around £10 million.

With the uncertainty surrounding Steward Downing and his future at Anfield, the signing of a player like Mertens in January could be the perfect means to allow the club to sell Downing on from Anfield where he has never made his mark.

That's about all Downing is good for, he spends most of his time on the pitch just watching what's going on anyway.  :p

Whats Downing worth today, 5m?

40mil would be a hell of a kitty if its given.
inevietably though it comes down to what we spend it on.
personally i think if we had that type of cash then we should go out and sign 2 proven mature players and one of them a striker.there is no point in spending that money on further inexperienced players at this level like borini.i like the lad and think he's intelligent in his play but he is struggling atm and he wont be the player we need him to be this season.
we have introduced a core of talented youngsters already and now its time to bring in the likes of kaka and villa to push us to the next level.
if we continue to buy young players and blood them in then all we will do is start a vicous cycle that sees us back at this stage every 5 years when the players make a name for themselves and do one for either glory or money.

somehow though i cant see fenway parting with that sort of cash in january

if we get £40m to spend then spend the lot on falcao, thats the only way we are going to win anything.
if you want to be more than a CL team that exists to milk a few quid out of the fans then you`ve got to have top, top players, there is no way around it.
barcelona have a great footballing philosophy but they`ve also got 3 of the best players on the planet including one of the best players in history. that philosophy of theirs wouldnt win them f**k all without great players.
it`s goals we are missing so go out and buy the best striker around.

I doubt that very much. I’d guess there is around £10mil + player sales in January and a £30-40mil budget for the summer.

Robin Van persie Feyenoord to Arsenal 2.75 Million
Gareth Bale Southampton to Tottenham 5 Million

Both under 10 Million

How many other none players did they buy before they got lucky? We dont have time to take risks on players that might turn out ok in a few years time.

By your logic we shouldnt spend anything at all, Gerrard was free!

We need a class Striker, not a Borini mark 2

Ba was free, Cisse was 11, Tiote, Cabaye, and Ben Arfa were all under 6.  All of these players could get 15-20 for Newcastle, except maybe Ba.  There's plenty of good players that come on the cheap, you just have to look in the right places.  Players like Michu, Jelavich, Gaston Ramirez even, all came for relatively cheap (except maybe Ramirez, but cheap considering everybody knew who he was).

Lets face it hes not going to score the goals this season we need,

Dont twist it.

We need a proven goal scorer not someone that might come good in a few years
