We needed a better back up striking option than Borini or Aspas mate and It's pointless spending tens of millions on someone who is going to spend a lot of time on the bench.
For £4m we have significantly strengthened the squad IMO.

Have to admit I never thought we'd go for Rickie Lambert, but could prove to be a shrewd bit of business for 4 million.  Proven goalscorer and although he's 32 he will have a lot of hunger still, especially returning to his boyhood club when I bet he thought his chance had passed.  He's also different to the type of striker we have.  No pace but clever in and around the box, good hold-up play and strong in the air for his size.  Can't hurt to have another scouse voice in the dressing room either.

I think we'll go into next season with Suarez, Sturridge, Borini and Lambert as our 4 forwards which isn't bad.  Aspas will hopefully be booted.

ssn are reporting it to be around 9mil which is scandalous for a 32 yr old who will be limited in the system we play.
yes he is a better option than the other 2 but at the 3rd time of trying and over 20 million wasted on the lot of them. we have spent far too much on squad players and this window should have been about buying quality for the first 11 and in turn that will strenghten the bench rather than plug it with more money and stop gaps.
we could have tied this deal up at the end of the window after we went about improving the 1st 11

From Sporting Life:

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert is expected to undergo a medical at Liverpool on Saturday after the two clubs agreed a fee for the England international.

Press Association Sport understands the Reds will pay an initial £4million for the player with the possibility of further add-ons, although reports of the deal costing £9million are wide of the mark.

Medical for Lambert tomorrow. Oh and it's not £9m. It's £4m.

The way some fans are still banging on you'd think we'd signed him on deadline day after months of rumours of getting Ibrahimovic.

Apparently we said we would walk away from Lambert deal if it wasn’t completed before squad fly to Miami this weekend

good bit of business tied up early I see. Lambert will offer us not only a back up option but a plan B that some harp on about us not having. He's great in the air.

Exactly.

Look at Aspsa, he's hardly had a sniff at the first team and how much did he cost?

£4 million is a good deal for an England international who genuinely adds another dimension to our team and style of play. As for the add ons, I couldn't care less. It'll be another million at most and be dependant on appearances and goals.

It's £4m mate (plus add on's) which is a pittance these days by premiership standards.
Your right we do need to bring in first team players but we also have an issue with our bench, we don't have anyone that can come on and get us a goal and we don't have anyone who can get on the end of a cross when teams park the bus against us and for £4m quid Rodgers has killed those 2 birds with one stone.
Obviously wether this summer will be deemed a success or not will be down to what degree Brendan can strengthen the starting XI but nevertheless this is a shrewd bit of business IMO.

I really hoped that we would cheat the system and pay 9 million for Lambert and 16 for Lallana and get them both :(

But this is fine too, Lambert would be a good back up option and he's different from what we already have. For 4 million, it's worth it.

David Maddock of the Mirror is saying  Lallana is "almost certain" while Lovren is a "real possibility" and Pedro is Brendan Rodgers' number one target. He is also saying that Borini is likely to leave and the club want between 12-14 million.

On a side note Kolo Toure has malaria

Spoke to a friend of mine who is a big southampton fan. Say's the talk down there is that Lallana to us is pretty much done bar any last minute hitches. Also said Lovren is following Pochettino to spurs

Potentially two forward players and a left back coming in first, not complaining but hope they don't leave hardly any money left
for a holding midfielder.

We need a top class player in there as I doubt our defence can take another campaign with Lucas protecting.

Don't want that Pedro, he's lightweight even in Spain and that's a country that regarded Aspas as a hard man.
Get well soon Kolo.
