LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers likes the look of Chesterfield’s giant keeper Aaron Chapman.

The 6ft 7in shot-stopper will head for Anfield for a week’s trial after a spell with rivals Everton.

Chapman, 22, cannot get into the League Two-leading Spireites' side but is tipped for a bright future in the game.

i was tipped for a bright future in the game  :nod  didnt happen though  :no probably shouldnt be taking everything my old man says as gospel  :D

these kind of rumours kill me, a keeper from 3 divisions below us that cannot even get a game at that level
i know this is just a rumour thread but some of the names posted in the last page or 2 are baffling especially as we are supposed to be building for the CL. i really hope they are nothing more than rumours

Not sure how I feel about it although i'm sure they'll be some that will rush to install him as a Natural successor to Stevie G.

If the article itself wasn't ridiculous enough the echo hasn't looked like that since the 70's.

Liverpool urged to move for Atletico Madrid star

Former Liverpool striker Luis Garcia believes the club should move to recruit Mario Suarez from Atletico Madrid this summer, with the midfielder ‘perfect’ for the rigours of Premier League football.

Suarez has only just returned to action after missing 18 games with a knee injury, and is likely to play a prominent role in any success achieved by Diego Simeone’s side this season having been a frequent fixture in the early part of the season.

The 26-year-old is well regarded at the Vicente Calderon and clearly has a fan in Garcia, himself a former Atletico player, and the Liverpool favourite has urged Brendan Rodgers to bring his compatriot to Anfield.

"Mario Suárez. I love him,” Garcia told the IBTimes when asked which player Liverpool should pursue.

"He has just returned to action after an injury but he is great. For me he would be ideal for Liverpool. He's a midfielder with great physical presence but as well he has a technique that would suit Liverpool ideally.

"He would be perfect for the Premier League because as well as being strong he has that touch of quality that makes the difference."

Suarez, a holding midfielder, is steadily being integrated back into the Atletico side by Simeone, with the Spain international making two substitute appearances in the recent encounters with Real Socieded and Almeria.

He failed to feature in the Copa del Rey defeat against Real Madrid on Tuesday but is in contention to feature when Atleti host Valladolid this weekend.

From the Mirror

So, hands up those of you predicting all sorts of doom and internal combustion for Liverpool on February 1?

You weren't alone. Judging by the reaction here on this forum, the general feeling was one of despair for the team's prospects, after the failure to land a single target in the transfer window.

Cut to a week later, and the gloom has lifted just a little huh? Not a bad performance against Arsenal ...just a hint of promise in those first 20 minutes? Develop that promise and they could one day be within striking distance of the top of the table.

Oh wait. They are. Not only are they in the argument, but suddenly, with Chelsea and Manchester City still to visit Anfield and undoubtedly nervous about that prospect, their voice is being taken very seriously. And that's the point.

Of course a big signing would have lifted everyone, of course the fans have a right to be disappointed after the big build up given to the pursuit of Yevhen Konoplyanka.

Yet even if they had captured the Ukrainian, he wouldn't have played against Arsenal, and more importantly, he wouldn't have featured much during the remainder of the season. Doubt that? Well, see how many starts Mohamed Salah plays for Chelsea between now and May.

A January signing rarely, if ever, makes a difference to a team that has been playing well to that point. Especially one from a different league and different football culture. That is why historically, so few clubs in the title race bother with the winter window. It's the teams that are struggling that resort to it.

Why? Because of the team spirit generated by their good run. Liverpool are a case in point. Their manager keeps saying they are not in the title race, but don't think for a second his players believe that.

They know with the firepower at their disposal, and with their rivals all still involved in the Champions' League, they have a chance...even if it still remains an outside one.

That notion was vividly evident against Arsenal. The spirit was there blazing away like a beacon of hope for all Liverpool fans. And the Reds' best two players? Sterling and Coutinho. One of whom would have felt under pressure had Konoplyanka arrived.

It is not January that is an issue for Liverpool, even if they didn't exactly make things easier on themselves by sending the MD himself out to try to navigate the treacherous waters of the Eastern European transfer market.

By spending several days out there, Ian Ayre always risked public opprobrium if he failed to complete the deal...and he got that in no uncertain terms, with many fans suggesting he was somehow a barrier to the signing.

In fact, surely logic suggests the opposite, given the fact he traveled out there under such circumstances. If he wanted to look good at the cost of a deal, he wouldn't have gone within a thousand miles of the Ukraine.

But by risking an inevitable backlash from the fans, it showed he and the owners were desperate to back the manager, and cared less for their own reputation.

Of course, beating Arsenal - or rather, destroying Arsenal - so incredibly helps move things along quickly...and allows us to state what has always been obvious, that the summer window is the vital one for Liverpool.

As now looks increasingly likely, they could well make the top four, and with it the prospect of two games a week for much of next season. And they simply don't have the squad for that.

They are at least five players short of a Champions' League squad...and five quality players at that; ones who can go into the first team and make changes seamless, not painful.

You only had to look at the respective benches from last Saturday to see Liverpool are a long way short. But of course their first XI was much, much better than Arsenal's, which is why they are very much still in the title race.

They have had a massive advantage all season of being able to prepare all week for the big matches, while their rivals have had to focus on often tough European assignments.

That will happen again over the next month, with the next round of the Champions' League kicking in, and the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona coming onto the radar.

Liverpool, on the other hand will be able to concentrate on their plans to face City and Chelsea. And their manager has shown he is pretty damn good at planning for those big games at Anfield.

We have said in this column all season that they have a puncher's chance of being in the title argument. With the goals threat of Suarez, Sturridge and now Sterling and Coutinho, it is perhaps even stronger than that.

To have any chance of lifting the trophy they will need a massive amount of luck, not least with injuries, because their biggest dip this season came when two of their biggest stars were out of the team.

But they have got players coming back right now, and they have got massive confidence. That really should at least take them into the Champions' League next season, and perhaps to within a handful of points of the top of the table.

If that is the case, even if they don't win the Premier League, that will be a remarkable turnaround for a side stuck in the bottom half for the first part of last season.

But it is then the hard work starts, because next summer they can't repeat the failings of last summer, and bring in four or five players who were simply squad men or ones for the future. They will need quality...and a decisive voice calling the transfer shots.

quite a few media reports linking us to Michah Richards today, with Radio 5 saying BR is a 'known' admirer. Depends on price, but would give us a competitive option for right back if it happens.
“You cannot transfer the heart and soul of Liverpool Football Club, although I am sure there are many clubs who would like to buy it.”

Why would we want another Mignolet? Zieler is a good goalie but he's very similar to Mign. If we must go for another keeper, we should go for someone who has different qualities, like someone who commands his area better, who's better at communicating or distributing the ball.
