On SWP I can agree a bit more with you. For that prize - and the fact that we really are missing a true right winger (though Kuyt has done quite well this season, I would still much rather see him played as a striker) - he would definitely have been an interesting player for us in my eyes. One could never tell though, if he would have been as good for us, as he has been for City this season. Perhaps he has just found his level? I don't know tbh, and I guess we'll never know now.

ya think chelsea's gonna sell him to us for that price?

No way. The price would be 20M and above, If they're considering of selling him to us.

It's all if's and but's really, you'll never know how much he would have cost us, if Rafa wanted him, if he would have adapted at LFC etc. Personally I was just giving my opinion on whether I would have had him at the club for the 8.5 million City paid (which I think I would given our current situation at RM). But as I said it's all pretty pointless speculation by now.

Kalou is overrated , inconsistent and riera is better than him , as for SWP , he's been immense for city , and like most of us wish we had gotten him .

Transfers - Gossip Shop: Booze Cruz for Liverpool    Eurosport - Fri, 05 Dec 12:05:00 2008

It's nearly Christmas, Roque Santa Cruz is being linked with a move from Blackburn, and the headline writes itself.

For what says 'Christmas spirit' like, well, several litres of Christmas spirits, a 24-pack of Stella and granny's alarmingly sweet sherry?

Certainly not some red-suited bloke in a Dorset 'theme park' desperately trying to find the sellotape to re-attach the cotton wool to his chin.

Santa Cruz himself is a model professional, of course, which is just one of the reasons why Rafa Benitez wants to bring him to Anfield and send Jermaine Pennant in the opposite direction.

Benitez intends to return to the good old days of squad rotation to reduce the load on Fernando Torres's prima donna-ish hamstrings.

With Robbie Keane presently unable to finish his dinner and Dirk Kuyt thriving on the wing, Benitez wants an extra body up front.

Something in the region of £8m plus Pennant could persuade Paul Ince to do business as Rovers look to whack the loot on a decent defender or two.

It hardly needs saying but Gossip Shop will say it anyway - Liverpool face competition from Manchester City for Santa Cruz's signature.

Liverpool could turn to former Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze, who joined Real Madrid just over a year ago.
The former Anfield target has had an unhappy time at the Bernabeu, leading to speculation he will be sold.
Liverpool were willing to pay around £8million when he was leaving Old Trafford, but would only fork out half that now. (Daily Mirror)

Daniel Agger is a target for AC Milan after his pay talks with Liverpool stalled.
The Denmark centre-half is adamant he wants to double his £35,000 wages. And with his current deal set to run out in less than 18 months, Liverpool will sell Agger in January rather than risk losing him in a cut-price transfer at the end of the season.
Negotiations are continuing, but the Anfield board feel they cannot sanction such a massive contract for a defender who may not even be first choice when Martin Skrtel returns from injury. Milan believe they can get Agger for £8million, which would represent a £3million profit for Liverpool on a player they signed from Brondby two years ago. (Daily Mirror)

According to the Daily Mail, both Liverpool and Manchester United are keeping close watch on Franco Zuculini, the Racing Club de Avellaneda midfielder.
The 18-year-old has been hugely impressive in his short professional career of 20-odd games, so much so that Argentina coach Diego Maradona has dubbed him “one of the stars at the next World Cup”.
Indeed, Zuculini has been strongly likened to one of Anfield’s current favourites - although the original version is only 24 himself, everyone is raving about ‘the new Javier Mascherano’.
.
Udinese had a €2.5 million bid rejected by Racing, who are demanding €10 million for their young superstar-in-the-making. However, financial problems mean the Argentine club should settle for around €7 million. (goal.com)

Premier League clubs Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have been given fresh hope of signing EURO 2008 star Xavi from La Liga giants Barcelona Xavi after talks about a new deal at the Nou Camp for the midfielder stalled again.

28-year-old Xavi is a product of the Barca youth set-up and has been at the Catalan club since 1991, but has not been able to agree a new deal at the Nou Camp, with the Spanish International’s current contract due to run out in 2010.

It is understood that there have been more than 10 meeting between Xavi and the Catalan club, but the two parties are still unable to come to an agreement, with the Spanish International seeking parity with top-earners Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry at the Nou Camp.

Director of football at Barcelona, Txiki Begiristain has admitted that the deal could take weeks or months to conclude and insisted that this type of deal is not easy to close.

Begiristain said: “Xavi is a great player and has some large expectations. In the world of the football it is not easy to close this type of contract because of the length of the deal and the need to keep a salary equilibrium of the staff.

“If it was easy the deal would already be done.”

However, Xavi’s agent Ivan Corretja revealed recently that the talks will not be allowed to go on forever and confirmed the interest in Xavi by clubs from the Premiership.

Corretja, told The Daily Star recently: “We have not been able to solve the situation at Barcelona, despite some months of negotiations. We feel he should be offered a deal which reflects his performances on the pitch.

“Everybody at Barcelona knows that there are some big European clubs interested in Xavi, particularly in England at the moment, and we will not allow this to go on forever.”

With 18 months remaining on Xavi’s current contract at Barcelona, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is monitoring the situation at the Nou Camp, with an offer in the region of £20million being mooted in the January transfer window to bring Xavi to Old Trafford. However, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is also keen to pair Xavi with countryman Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates Stadium, with Liverpool also reportedly interested in bringing the central-midfielder to Anfield.

Valencia, are leading the race ahead of Liverpool and La Liga rivals Barcelona to sign Brazilian starlet Keirrison, with Los Che opening talks with the young Brazilian’s management company, according to Sport.

19-year-old Keirrison currently plays for Brazilian club Coritiba and was a pivotal figure in the Coxa Branca winning the Campeanato Serie B last season and has shone in the top-flight of Brazilian football this season.

Keirrison has an incredible strike-rate for Coritiba, with the young forward scoring 54 goals in 100 appearances for the Brazilian side since making his senior debut in 2007 after coming through the youth system at the club.

Sport claim that Valencia are willing to pay £8million to bring Keirrison to the Mestalla and have opened talks with Traffic, who own 80% of the striker’s registration, with Coritiba owning the other 20%.

Keirrison is expected to leave Coritiba in January, with Valencia now appearing to lead Premier League club Liverpool and Barca in the chase for the highly rated youngster.

However, the 20% stake of Keirrison that Coritiba own is believed to be complicating the talks with Valencia, which could leave the door open for a move to the Nou Camp or Anfield.

Would absolutely LOVE Xavi at the club, as he truly would be just the creative spark we so desperately need from midfield. That being said, there is - imo - no chance in hell that he'll actually leave Barca. These are just the usual rumours fabricated by the newspapers, which always pop up when someone hasn't signed a contract extension yet (furthermore it is also a classic example of an agent putting pressure on the club, by stating that numerous other clubs are interested in his client). He's a Barca-boy through and through, and he will most definitely continue to be so me thinks. Cracking little player though.

Wouldn't go near Santa Cruz for the prices being touted.  Blackburn got him for a couple of million which was a good deal.  But given that he was never a prolific scorer for Bayern and doesn't seem to be a consistent scorer this season, I'm more inclined to say that he overperformed last season and will struggle to ever consistently perfrom at that level again.

Wouldn't pay more than about 4 million for him.  He also has a poor injury record don't forget.

You know what would be great? If we could use this apparent interest in Babel from Real Madrid to spark City to pay way over the odds for Babel. Then we might be able to fund a move for another striker.
