All our legends are practically british and it would be sad, no matter how good he is, for torres to a massive legend over an english star.

???
i think you are mixing liverpool football club with the england international side . Downing for 20 million ? are you fcking kidding me ?! No wonder England as a nation sucks fcking balls on the big stages with average players being sold around for ridiculous money just because they're english. Overpriced, overrated, and when you look at chelsea reportedly offering around 25mill to get Robinho and R.Madrid getting Van Der Vaart for about 10mill... downing should be worth around 7mill tops. But hey, hes english lets get him for 20mill !
Fuk rite off mate we already paid over the odds for Keane just because hes 'proven' in the prem and would 'hit the ground running' !
My a'ss! Fcking get quality for decent money and enough with all the overpriced average players !  Dont get me wrong id take downing for the right price since hes better than what we got but for anything near what you seem to be suggesting it would quite simply be absurd !

Downing is not the answer really and certainly not at the prices reported.

What is puzzling to me is the fact we are going for a left winger when surely our main problem is still the right. Babel at least can play left and is fairly affective but Kuyt is just chasing about on the right really and its like we are a man down with him out there.

I can see Downing turning out to be another Pennant, just not good enough for a top four club really. We need better than him and I would rather do nothing with the money than make do as weve stuffed up doing that too many times in the past.

Being reported on Chelsea website that Wright-Phillips has joined Everton. Not sure how true so stuck it in here, as we have had a long standing interest (at least amongst the fans) LINK

Liverpool & Everton: Riera transfer update

I have spoken with sources close to Albert Riera who have told me that the player "could not be trying any harder than he is to make the move to Liverpool happen."  With Anfield therefore clearly the player's first choice, the same sources also said that Albert knows "he will learn a lot from Benitez and he knows how serious the Liverpool manager is, although he knows he is going to have to work very hard."

It would appear, then, that if Liverpool match Everton's offer, Albert Riera will be joining the red half of Merseyside. The player himself believes that things could be sorted out by as early as Tuesday.

Of course, whether or not Liverpool do increase their offer remains to be seen, and Rafa Benitez believes that Espanyol are taking advantage of the rival bid from Everton to increase the transfer fee.

The Espanyol president is unsure about selling the winger at all: after all, we are talking about a player who has been described by an authoritative source at the Barcelona club as being "the best winger in Europe - when he plays well." Understandably, the Espanyol president is therefore concerned as to how the transfer will be received by the club's supporters.

However, there are other key figures at Espanyol who are keen for the sale to go ahead as they are aware that Riera is very unhappy at the club - and he is the kind of player who, when he is unhappy, his form suffers terribly. Furthermore, they have already lined up a replacement: a young South American talent who they feel sure will multiply in value over the next few seasons.

We missed out big time on Bentley. If Blackburn really are interested in Pennant we should have done a part exchange. The right remains a problem and we continue trying to put square pegs in round holes.

The left is big a problem as the right. Downing has decent all round attributes but has failed to kick on the past few years and excel in anything. Maybe a move to a club were expectations are higher would take him to the next level? It’s hard to tell, but I certainly wouldn’t pay £15 million for him.

Seriously lad,i don't think getting Riera is the answer to challenge for the premiership title and the idea of selling alonso to get barry....i'd rather keep alonso.  :(
