Craig bellamy - 14 million?

The Premiership - General Discussion

Postby JC_81 » Mon Jan 19, 2009 12:31 pm

Can't believe the reported fee of 14 million Man City have apparently agreed to pay West Ham for Bellamy.

Largely unconvincing for us - a decent player but nothing more and seemed to struggle with the pressures of playing for a big club.  We bought him for around 7mil I think, then made a slight profit on him, I think West Ham took him for around 9mil.  So tell me how, after a largely unconvincing spell at West Ham (the last 6 games aside where he has been in good form) littered with injuries, and now pushing 30 (29 to be exact) his value has gone up 5 million???

I don't accept that it's 'just the Man City factor' with them throwing cash around, because Spurs have reportedly made sizeable offers for him too.  Am I missing something here?  Or do others find this transfer a really odd one?

It's complete nonsense to think that Bellamy is worth £14m. People had a go at us for paying £20m for Keane yet Bellamy's scoring record, assist record and temperament is nowhere near the same level as Keane.

It seems that spending 18 months at a club and being injured for most of that time doubles your value these days. :lookaround

Ridiculous fee for a completly average player, and people wonder why the likes of Wenger and Benitez shop abroad. Average premiership goalscrorers like Andy Johnsen and Craig Bellamy going for £10M+, its crazy.

Wuhu... that means we'll only have to wait little less than a year, and Degen will be worth... well, what's the double of ZERO?!  :D

On the Bellamy situation, I agree with the previous post about the fact that ordinary PL strikers (players in general) seem to be way overpriced compared to when you're shopping abroad.

That's true, but at 14 million Bellamy is costing more than:

Defoe (7.5mil Spurs-Portsmouth 1 year ago)
Crouch (10-12 mil was it to Portsmouth?)
Johnston (10 mil Everton-Portsmouth)
Yakubu (12 mil Middlesborough - Everton)

All of the above have better scoring records in the Premier league and were established Premiership players before the moves I mentioned.  Even in terms of 'proven Premiership goalscorers' (for which the jury is still very much out on Bellamy even at 29 years old), Bellamy is a complete rip off at 14 million.

Cant believe Redknapp can blame Man City for swelling the prices of all players, Redknapp is manager of Spurs, have you seen how much theyhave spent on players lately? Cr@p players at that: modric, bent to name just 2.

Modric is a very good player. He's just been played out of position and it would always take him at least a year to fully adapt to the premiership anyway.

Bent on the other hand is a complete joke and a waste of £18m.

According to SSN a 'prominent figure' at one of the North-east clubs has said that very little business is being done by PL clubs this transfer window, because everyone is waiting to see what Spurs and Man City do first.

No one wants to sell any players to another club if there is any chance that Man City or Spurs might be interested in that player - because either of those clubs are likely to pay over the odds.  Apparently there may be a transfer flurry towards the end of the window once Man City and Spurs are 'out of the way' having either signed or failed to sign their targets.

So you're right, Redknapp has no right to be badmouthing Man City at the moment.

Have to completely disagree, Modric is way too light-weight for the premiership and is a waste. But spurs always pay over the top, and Harry just loves winding up other clubs... Redknapp and Bellamy would have deserved each other if it had worked out.

Still can't imagine Bellamy gracing the same turf as Kaka let alone smack him with a club!
