Wright-phillips. - Anyone to change their minds?

I don't think we will go knocking for him unfortunately.

But i think when our squad is fully fit the midfield will be:

Luis Garcia   Alonso   Gerrard   Nunez

I feel thats Benitez's long term plan. Lets just hope Nunez will bring us what i think Wright-Phillips would.

I think he is a good player who can improve our squad on the right midfield, although a bit on the small side. But then, so is Ashley Cole.

The problem is having signed a new contract and being an England international now, he'd be very expensive.

shaun wright phillips is an exceptional talent who has had an outstanding twelve months of form. he is going to have to leave man city sooner rather than later if he wants to improve his england career.

i personally don't think we need him at anfield thought. the price would be too high and it would prove to be a big gamble. i'd rather see him produce for a couple more seasons yet before i pass judgement.

Being lightweight has severe disadvantages playing week in and week out in a physical league like EPL.

I would think the fullbacks & wingers don't really have to be built that well......

I took some flak last year by claiming SWP is a flash in the pan and too small, and while he has proven me wrong to an extent, I doubt we'll see SWP being a top player in 4 or 5 years time.

There have been plenty of guys like him before who had 1 or 2 great seasons before being caught out or lose their pace.

BTW Stu, you were one the guys giving me flak last season from what I said about SWP....glad to see that you've come around to my point of view!!!!  :D  :D  :)  :D

I like SWP but he would cost a fortune. Rafa has already said he won't pay inflated prices just because a player is British so it seems very unlikely he will be coming our way. Nunez has had an unlucky start to life on Merseyside so the manager may look to use Garcia on the right when we play 2-up. Finnan has been solid if unspectacular when asked to play there.

JBG... i said it down to your reasoning.

You said it was his size and i strongly disagreed with that. As i believe this isn't a factor at all.

You will also remember at the time i said Wright-Phillips wasn't the man and i still haven't changed my opinion. I think he'd be better than Finnan, but "better than Finnan" isn't enough. I want to see class.

He's always going to be a good player, he's not world class though or even top class.

Only ribbing you Stu.

There have been loads of guys like SWP before: Franz Carr, Ruel Fox, Mark Walters, Tony Daley, Danny Wallace, John Solako, Dale Gordon etc etc etc.

All of these guys had 1 or 2 excellent seasons before fading forever.

If SWP gets a bad injury then I think he'll fade forever, as without his pace (which is exceptional) he is an ordinary player.

As for his size, its true that it shouldn't necessarily matter, but in SWP case, when his pace goes I think his size will be a major drawback as he'll be kicked out of games.

Guys like Maradona were small, but SWP is EXCEPTIONALLY small.

Funny to see SWP and Maradonna mentioned in the one sentance, Diego was strong as an ox.

I agree that SWP is likely to be another Ruel Fox type player. I don't think Arsene would buy him, maybe another Jeffers type squad player.

If he wasn't English the media wouldn't build him up. Guys like Ronaldo at Manu and Arsenals Spanish youngster (forget his name) are better players as is Duff at Chelsea.

I'm not saying he's not good but he is not better than what Aresnal Manu or  Chelsea have on the wing.

i think if Arsenal went in for him he would go as his dad (ian Wright ) will tell him that it is a no brainer the gunner come in you sign simple as. And i think regardless of what city do or even what arsenal do if they ask he will go.

We should have had a shot at him last summer before he resigned with city. I would like to see him in our red but i just don't see it happening now.
