Kewell's agent slams Liverpool, UK doctors SEBASTIAN HASSETT
February 2, 2010

HARRY KEWELL'S agent believes the football world was never able to see the best of the striker at Liverpool because of the ineptitude of the British medical system, which repeatedly failed to correctly diagnose and treat Kewell's injuries.

Bernie Mandic, who has enjoyed a career-long association with Kewell, revealed that his star client was repeatedly denied access to the world's leading medical authorities, which he believes are found in Australia, where Kewell now receives treatment.

The Galatasaray star is in Sydney to have his injured groin assessed, with the good news arriving yesterday that the injury - which some had speculated could keep him sidelined for months - would keep him from training for just two weeks, with a full comeback thought to be about a month away.

While Kewell, 31, has largely managed to resurrect his career in Turkey, Mandic and his marquee client have been left to ponder what might have been had Liverpool's medical staff allowed Kewell to be assessed elsewhere during what should have been the peak years of his career.

''The reason he gets treated out here now is because we have the best medical staff in the world,'' Mandic told the Herald yesterday. ''He lost 3½ years of his career at Liverpool because the guys over there in England had, quite literally, no idea what they were talking about.

''You have to wonder what they're doing over there. Perhaps they're trying to protect their reputations, but they're certainly not trying to protect their players. I think it's a disgrace, as I think it was a disgrace the way Harry was treated. What goes around comes around, and people are now wondering, 'How has he recovered like that?' when everyone in England thought he was a broken toy …

''It's a damn shame we didn't … come here earlier. If nothing else, the last World Cup would have seen a far better Harry and maybe they could have avoided the [foot] injury he suffered in the end. But that's life, you learn from it, move on, and that's exactly what Harry's done. Now he doesn't take any chances. He likes to get second opinions, and the bottom line is that Australian doctors have never let him down.''

Ironically, Liverpool - who are believed to have thought Kewell would never make a full recovery - are now trying to track down the Australian specialists who brought him back to full health.

''We had Rafa Benitez call him the other night inquiring who these guys were because Fernando Torres has got such major problems now,'' Mandic said. ''Then we've had Jonathan Woodgate's physio, Dave Hancock, who used to work at Chelsea and before that worked with Harry and Jonathan at Leeds, inquiring about Jonathan, who is apparently almost unfixable.

''Look at Liverpool - why is it that over so many recent years, usually around November, lots of their key players are injured? … It's always soft-tissue injuries. How come other clubs, like Arsenal, don't have that sort of a dilemma? And why do their players recover quicker? There's logical reasons for all of this.''

makes ya wonder though, if our medical system is that bad - will Torres ever recover totally? or have we just Harry Kewell'd him?

Totally the opposite that Aquaman stated, he praised our medical staff, said the Roma people were the reason he was always getting injured.

I am no medical or sports science specialist but...

You can't underestimate the impact the weather and conditions have on players in the UK. In would think that in warmer climates with more favourable under foot conditions players are far less likely to get injured than if they are playing/training on heavy pitches in freezing conditions.

However, that being said, we do seem to have more than our fair share of players getting soft tissue injuries so maybe there is something wrong with our facilities or training methods. Am I not right in thinking that a review/investigation was undertaken at Melwood and this was instigated by Rafa some months ago??

Skysports:

Spanish national team coach Vicente del Bosque has urged Fernando Torres to delay his return from injury with Liverpool.

Torres returned to training in midweek following a lay-off with a knee problem and is line to return for the clash with Wigan on March 8.

European Champions Spain are amongst the favourites to take the Word Cup crown in July and the 59-year-old says his country's chances are improved by Torres being kept out of action.

The comments could anger Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, who has seen his talisman play just 21 times this season.

He has notched 12 goals during an injury ravaged campaign that has seen the club struggle to hold onto the coveted fourth Champions League place.

Torres' recent battle with a groin problem was sustained whilst on international duty with Spain, reigniting the club versus country row that provides the backdrop to national team fixtures.

But del Bosque wants the 25-year-old to play less for the Merseysiders in an attempt to keep him in top condition for this summer's finals in South Africa.

He told the News of the World: "The fewer games Fernando plays for his club, the better it will be for us.

"We want him not to play too many games, to recover completely for the World Cup and have had some rest in between. We'd like him fresh for the tournament.

"That can only be good news for Spain. We hope Liverpool's loss will be our gain.

"Fernando Torres represents a crucial part of our squad."

****************

It pisses me off that it is for Spain that he keeps getting injured and to the NOTW. What a c0ck!

A bit disrespectful from Del Bosque to be honest. No offence if you read this Sabre but :censored: Del Bosque and :censored: Spain. They don't pay his wages! To be honest Torres should miss the world cup and have that operation otherwise it will be back to the same shyte next season.

I get that he is a top player for them but it's not like they are without options if he isn't playing. Their bench is full of top players ffs.
