Home truths - Anfield the 'welcome mat' ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I was just looking at our home record in the Premiership, despite some fans making noises about us improving under Rafa, our home record remains in the 'simply not good enough' bracket. This seems as good a time as any to broach the subject ahead of two games at home on the bounce, and while we have won our last three league games we lost one and drew two of the previous three.

Last season was a good season pointswise, but we won more games on our travels than at Anfield and exactly half our points. In fact we only scored five more goals at home than away last season

Rafa Premiership record at Anfield

09/10 : P11 W7 D2 L2 F28 A11 PTS 23 (GD +17)
08/09 : P19 W12 D7 L0 F41 A13 PTS 43 (GD +28)
07/08 : P19 W12 D6 L1 F43 A13 PTS 42 (GD +28)
06/07 : P19 W14 D4 L1 F39 A7 PTS 46 (GD +32)
05/06 : P19 W15 D3 L1 F32 A8 PTS 48 (GD +24)
04/05 : P19 W12 D4 L3 F31 A15 PTS 40 (GD +16)

We might have only lost three league games in the last 2.5 seasons at Anfield, but we've drawn far more than we should have. It may be difficult to beat us, but it's not that hard to get a point :

04/05-06/07 : P57 W41 D11 L5 PTS 131 (W72%, D19%, L9%)
07/08-09/10 : P49 W31 D15 L3 PTS 108 (W63%, D31%, L6%)

Might look a bit tidier in terms of fewer losses, but one in three visiting teams has picked up a point or all three in the past 2.5 seasons - and you pick up more points for wins of coruse. If you want 27 wins which is the kind of level we need to be aiming at to challenge for the title, then you need to win home games. If we win 15 at home then we'd need 12+ away, home wins by champions since Rafa arrived have been 16, 17, 15, 18, and 14. Chelsea won 15 away when they won only 14 at home and lost once all season. NONE of the champions of the past five seasons have won less than 27 games in total. In fact the home record of past champions, something we should be aspiring to, is something quite remarkable

PREMIERSHIP HOME RECORD

Champions 02/03-08/09 : P133 W111 D17 L5 F300 A73 PTS 350 (W83%, D13%, L4%)
Rafa 04/05-09/10 : P106 W72 D26 L8 F214 A67 PTS 242 (W68%, D24.5%, L7.5%)

Near double the draw and loss rate, while we might not have had the same kind of money spent by the two sides who've won the majority of titles in the past seven seasons, we shoudl be able to beat more than we do and not lose as many. Eight home defeats isn't too bad, but 26 draws (1 in 4) is pretty feeble. I bet I'm not the only person who feels we too often set up at home as if we're the away side.

What about the Lucas/Kuyt onslaught. Neither should be playing as much as they are. This probably is a good reason as to why our home form is "simply not good enough".

It might have something to do with the fact most teams come here and park the bus in front of the goal, and then unfortunately we do not have the players with the guile to get past these defences.

Oh here we go again.

All I will say is that I think at times we have been too cautious at home and maybe that has resulted in us getting less goals than we should have. We showed last season when we go for games by the jugular we can get the results but the confidence is lacking right now so we need to build that up again.

No need for another thread though. Ozwat you should just have your own thread and keep bumping it each time you have new stats to share. Take Barrys advise and have a w@nk first though.

nonetheless that is impressive.3 games in 2 1/2 years.
unfortunate though that i remember too many of the poor negative displays against poor oposition resulting in awful draws!!

last season teams were coming here playing for a draw, this year they fancy themselves for 3 points!!
