as it stands today i'd play lucas against spurs. dropping gerrard back isn't the answer. him and mascherano aren't a good central midfield partnership.

Im not a fan though. I don't think Lucas is good enough to cut it in a Premierleague challenging team. I can't see how playing a diamond with Masch at the back and Steve at the front shouldn't work tbh. Plessis? is he still about? We need to replace Xabi with someone i reckon.

Like a previous post I made. Spearing is better than Lucas, so play him and develop some new talent.

I'm pretty mush seething over this development.....Partly at Alonso, partly at Rafa, partly at the club, partly at the overall greed in the modern game.....

Firstly Alonso: So, you got in a huff last year over the approaches made to Barry...So what ? Your season prior to that wasn't great, and the manager had the best intentions of the club at heart. What do you do ? You get in a huff, carry a monkey on your back for over a year, and then instead of shytting and getting off the pot, you carry this on for weeks/months until the issue is forced, by which time you have pi$$ed off a huge number of fans at the club....Happy now ?

Second Rafa: Is this another one of your examples of duff man-management ? When will it end, eh ? Keane (let's not go there); the saga over 'which-position-will-I-play-Gerrard-today'; the squabblings that led to the departure of Paco Ayesteran; the pettiness over the 'who controls the purse strings'....All of which was conducted in the public eye.....NOT the way it should be done....And while I'm at it, Rafa, STATE YOUR INTENTIONS OVER MASCH !!

The club: How much did we finally get for Alonso ? 25M ? 30M ? Was it enough ? Here we had drunken moneybags Perez in Madrid signing cheques like confetti....and we took less than the 35M valuation we placed on Xabi's head. That, and the miserly sum the same club paid for Arbeloa....sheesh - have you any idea what it means to stick to your guns ? Or is it that transparent to the whole world that we are so poor and almost go cup in hand to these guys ?

This general madness prevailing in modern football: The money spent by Citeh, Madrid, Chavski etc....It is vulgar and obscene. Today I read a story about hunger and starvation, children living in abject poverty, no future.....and it wasn't in Africa....it was right on our doorstep. Yet the money these guys throw around is just sick.....

Rant over !

So ıt fınally looks lıke gettıng wrapped up in the next day or so. Absolutely gutted despite knwoing ıt was on the cards for the last 2 months + the 240+ pages of specualtıon on here. Faırplay to Rafa for stıckıng to hıs guns and playıng hardball wıth Madrıd. I'm sure Xabı goes wıth the blessıngs of most LFC fans after 5 years of stellar servıce. Its just that lıttle bıt tougher to swallow bearıng ın mınd how close we came last year. I really donit know what the manager wıll do to replace hım. I reckon Lucas wıll get fırst shot at the job but he ıs a (very) poor mans Mascherano and doesn't possess anythıng lıke the range of passıng, speed of thought or fluıdıty of an Alonso. We WILL struggle to recapture last years form ıf Rafa ıs relyıgn on hım to fıll the voıd. The lınk wıth Aquıllanı makes no sense to me gıven hıs shockıng ınjury record and Cattermole? decent agressıve yougn Englısh player but once agaın, far more ın the mould of a Mascherano.

You don't replace a Rolls Royce wıth a Rottweıller.

In fairness he was nearly sold last year against his wishes and still went on to have his best season for us. HE wants to go this year but its not him that has stalled the deal and has led us into this drawn out saga

I just can't believe what I was reading in Marca.

RM just refuses to move from £24 million.
If that is the case I would just sit Alonso down and tell him:

"You are staying, end of story. World cup year and you will have to play well to be taken into that squad."

Tranfer request or no request, never £24 million

Latest From Balague

Alonso Transfer Request Confirmed - and Denied

Following today`s press reports that Xabi Alonso has handed in a written transfer request; we have been inundated with questions from fans asking if this is true...

In response, I can only say that this is a very complicated situation and I am hearing conflicting versions of events: the player`s entourage are denying that Xabi Alonso has handed in a transfer request; while on the other hand, Liverpool Football Club insists that a transfer request was submitted to the club last night, and it has been suggested that the paperwork was prepared at least a month in advance.

I am of the opinion that the decision to make this public knowledge represents an attempt to speed up the negotiations while simultaneously making it known that it is the player who wants to leave.

As has been widely reported, Rafa Benitez had effectively placed a 48 hour deadline on the deal and it is apparent that Liverpool want this matter resolved once and for all, today, so that they can plan for life with, or without, Alonso from tomorrow. However, Real Madrid – or should we say Florentino Perez – may stubbornly refuse to be seen to pressured into reacting to any ultimatum and, furthermore, the Spanish club are encountering difficulties in offloading players to raise funds and free up space in an overloaded squad.

On the other hand, it is possible that a fee could be agreed today and that Liverpool accept an immediate first instalment with subsequent payments made at a later date covering the total amount.

The ball has now been placed in Real Madrid`s court and it is impossible to second guess what their next move will be. It is evident that at least one party wants the matter resolved today, but whether or not they get their wish remains to be seen...

I don't think he's anywhere near as talented as Lucas personally. I don't think that necessarily has to mean there isn't a career at Liverpool for him though.

He's also a better right back than central midfielder anyway so the argument is somewhat irrelevant.
