Balls in Xabis court now i think

Rafa Benitez remained tight-lipped when quizzed on whether his side's 5-0 defeat of Singapore on Sunday represented Xabi Alonso's last appearance in a Liverpool shirt.

The Spanish midfielder, publically courted by Real Madrid all summer, came on for the final 13 minutes for his first pre-season appearance.

Benitez has repeatedly stated his intent to keep Alonso at Anfield but when asked if the player would still be in England next season, he felt the question would be better directed at the 27-year-old.

"It's a question that you have to ask him," he said.

"Honestly, we've been talking about this for two months but I think that it is a question for him and not for us.

"He has three years on his contract and we know he is a great player - that's why we signed him and renewed his contract. So you have to ask him."

Benitez declared himself delighted with his team's performance in the final game of their tour of Asia and was especially pleased with the promise shown by 20-year-old Krisztian Nemeth.

Nemeth came off the substitutes' bench to score twice in the Lion City and has clearly made a favourable impression on his manager.

"He was really good two years ago for the reserve team, scoring a lot of goals but last year he had some problems with injuries," added Benitez.

"But he showed today that he's a good finisher and a player with a future.

"It depends on the players always. If they're knocking on the door and they knock really hard, then I have to hear. This is important and it depends on them."

Rafael Benitez has told reporters who are asking questions about Xabi Alonso's future to ask the man himself.

Speaking after the 5-0 win over Singapore, Rafa was asked if the game was Alonso's last for Liverpool : "It's a question that you have to ask him, Honestly, we've been talking about this for two months but I think that it is a question for him and not for us.

"He has three years on his contract and we know he is a great player - that's why we signed him and renewed his contract. So you have to ask him."

Rafa recently made it clear he wanted Alonso to stay, and it is now up to the player to either put these rumours to bed and say he's saying or hand in a transfer request and do one.

Balague reckons he is staying with us

Balague writes on his official website: “Rafa Benitez is desperate to have this matter resolved as soon as possible in order to finalise the squad for next season without having to make any late adjustments to his preparations.”

“Overall, the situation remains much as it did before: Real Madrid must pay the €35 million that Liverpool are asking for Alonso, but the Spanish club insist that they will not increase their previous offer - and they must also now reduce their squad and sell before they can buy.”

“Liverpool will not lower their asking price and Benitez is running out of patience – he may even place a week’s deadline on this deal as an ultimatum to Madrid.”

“However, there has been a positive change of mood in the Liverpool camp over the last few days and for those who want Xabi to stay, a more optimistic outlook.”

“While it is always possible that Madrid may suddenly put the money on the table and meet Liverpool’s €35 million asking price, I can tell you that, in the last couple of days, a source close to Liverpool has told me ‘there is more chance of Xabi staying at Liverpool than there is of him going.’”

“Regardless of how Alonso feels right now, I am sure that the prospect of representing Spain at next summer’s World Cup will help Benitez coax the best out of him.”

It's a decent point of Balague to ensure Xabi's good football attitude, not that Alonso has a lot of competition to play behind the little midfielders (Senna is aging), but I don't think Alonso can't afford a season in the bench and lazyness if he wants to be in the world cup.

Anyhow, I don't think it will be necessary that to coax him, last summer the incident about his son, and the "shock" of knowing that he was a transferable player was more recent than this year no? so I can't see why Alonso can't simply stay and do his stuff.

I'm satisfied with Rafa and Purslow, they have stayed solid against all the Real Madrid treachery, rejected offers of 27M, and have kept the situation well controlled.

Would be great if he did stay with us but then next year he would only have 2 years left on his deal so Rafa would have to get him signed up to a new deal or extention. I hope this isnt just him staying for 'another year' and then asking to move next year.

Why should Alonso be shocked about a move? Thats how football players make money, signing on fees plus improved salary - its win win.

It's shocking to know the club considers to sell you, when you know it in the newspaper rather than directly from the club.
